Subaru’s burgeoning Wilderness sub-brand hits a new milestone this year, as a second-generation model arrives for the first time in the manufacturer’s history. The Wilderness lineup of more capable, rugged SUVs began four years ago with the Outback and this year, an all-new Outback launches, which includes an all-new Wilderness edition.

What Is The 2025 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness?

The 2025 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness is a rare bird. It’s a smallish crossover with a fair amount of off-road capability.

We all do it from time-to-time. Some of us, like yours truly, does it constantly. What I’m referring to is lounge chair product planning.

Subaru is preparing to debut a new performance prototype at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show in late October. The automaker offered an early glimpse at what could be the next chapter in the brand’s sports car lineup.

Not everyone wants to drive an SUV. Sometimes, the humble compact car is the better tool for the job.

Subaru has announced price adjustments for almost all of its models and trim levels, which are expected to take effect in early June.

Serendipitously, a 2025 Subaru Outback 2.4 XT arrived in my driveway about 24 hours before the new 2026 model was revealed at the New York Auto Show. The contrast could not be starker. Sitting in my nicely equipped crimson-colored Outback on a chilly spring morning, I wondered if Subaru made a mistake.

Although none of the dimensions exactly match up, think of the slight size increase of the Lexus RZ versus the Toyota bZ4X to get a rough idea.

One thing we can confirm, though, is the fact that the Wilderness is back for the new generation Outback.

As promised last year, Subaru has just introduced the 2025 Forester Hybrid, or the 2025 Subaru Forester e-BOXER Hybrid for Canadian consumers. As one of the last SUVs in its segment to garner a hybrid option, the new gas-electric Forester helps position Subaru’s high-selling utility box against fierce competition. 

Before we get too far into this festival of definitions and hair-splitting, it is important to know that – absent of all other considerations – power to all four wheels simply gets you up to crashing speed more quickly. Four- (or all-) wheel drive does nothing to improve stopping distances and does very little if your vehicle is equipped with worn tires that resemble party balloons.
