TOKYO—Subaru's giving us another glimpse of a potential high-performance electric model, and we... kinda dig it?

TOKYO—Subaru shows off what essentially appears to be a (very production-ready) WRX hatchback. Surprise surprise, we like it a whole lot.

Then there is the Performance-B STI concept, which was actually teased months ago. For hatchback fans, this is the one to drool over: we see huge flared fenders on what is clearly a WRX foundation. The family shot shows off a wing fit for a rally car, too. We don't know what exactly is under that multi-vented hood, but we do know Subaru's all-wheel drive system is present. Of course.

Subaru has released pricing for the 2026 Solterra EV, which arrives at dealerships this fall. The updated all-electric SUV starts at $38,495, the same entry price as the outgoing model.

What Is The 2025 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness?

The 2025 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness is a rare bird. It’s a smallish crossover with a fair amount of off-road capability.

We all do it from time-to-time. Some of us, like yours truly, does it constantly. What I’m referring to is lounge chair product planning.

Subaru is preparing to debut a new performance prototype at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show in late October. The automaker offered an early glimpse at what could be the next chapter in the brand’s sports car lineup.

Serendipitously, a 2025 Subaru Outback 2.4 XT arrived in my driveway about 24 hours before the new 2026 model was revealed at the New York Auto Show. The contrast could not be starker. Sitting in my nicely equipped crimson-colored Outback on a chilly spring morning, I wondered if Subaru made a mistake.

We’ll wait and gauge the public’s response as to whether or not this styling/genre switch is a good idea. One thing we can confirm, though, is the fact that the Wilderness is back for the new generation Outback.

Before we get too far into this festival of definitions and hair-splitting, it is important to know that – absent of all other considerations – power to all four wheels simply gets you up to crashing speed more quickly. Four- (or all-) wheel drive does nothing to improve stopping distances and does very little if your vehicle is equipped with worn tires that resemble party balloons.

A newcomer to the rapidly growing small all-electric SUV market, the Subaru Solterra is already undergoing some significant changes for the 2024 model year. Safety, charging, and aesthetics have all been tweaked.

Upgrading to the Crosstrek Premium at $28,365 brings the option for a larger 2.5-liter engine making 182 hp, available on the Sport ($30,915), Limited ($32,815), and the off-road-focused Wilderness ($33,915) trims. The Wilderness trim stands out with its 9.3 inches of ground clearance, rugged styling, and extra underbody protection.

One of the more popular segments when it comes to electric vehicles is the compact SUV market. Last year we compared eight of the offerings in this class, and more recently tested out other competitors in this space.
