Subaru Debuts 2027 Getaway: A Three-Row SUV With 420 Horsepower
Subaru just revealed its largest EV yet: a new three-row SUV called the Getaway.
Making its debut at the 2026 New York Auto Show, the midsize family hauler is Subaru's version of the recently unveiled Toyota Highlander EV, albeit with a few unique tricks up its sleeve. The Getaway shares its underlying architecture with the Highlander EV, continuing the partnership between the two automakers.
Unlike the Toyota, which offers multiple powertrain configurations, the Getaway will be sold exclusively with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup. Output is rated at 420 horsepower, giving it an advantage over the Highlander EV’s 338-hp AWD configuration. Subaru says that’s enough to launch the SUV from 0 to 60 mph in under five seconds—super quick for a vehicle in this class.
Visually, the two SUVs are clearly siblings—particularly in profile—but Subaru has worked to give the Getaway its own identity. The front fascia with an illuminated Subaru badge, unique lighting signatures, and a more rugged roof rack setup help distinguish it from its Toyota bones, and tie it visually with its stablemates, the Solterra, Uncharted, and Trailseeker.
At launch, the Getaway will come equipped with a 96-kWh battery pack, which Subaru says should deliver over 300 miles of range on a full charge. A second, more affordable version with a 77.0-kWh battery is expected to follow in the first half of 2027, though range estimates for that setup haven’t been announced.
Charging capability is competitive for the segment. With a 150-kW DC fast charger, Subaru claims the battery can go from 10 to 80 percent in about 30 minutes. The inclusion of a NACS charging port also gives the Getaway access to Tesla’s robust Supercharger network.
The Getaway offers 8.3 inches of ground clearance, along with selectable drive modes for snow and off-road conditions. A feature called Grip Control acts as a low-speed off-road cruise system, helping maintain traction on rough terrain.
Towing capacity is rated at 3,500 pounds, which is pretty good for small trailers, snowmobiles, ATVs, go-karts, boats, or a weekend camper.
Inside, the Getaway mirrors the Higlander EV almost exactly, with a clean, tech-forward cabin layout. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster sits ahead of the driver, paired with a 14.0-inch central touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with a 15-watt wireless charging pad.
The Getaway offers seating for up to seven passengers, depending on configuration, and is positioned squarely against rivals like the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9, and obviously the Toyota it's based on.
Heated front seats come standard, with available heated second- and third-row seats, ventilated seating in the first two rows, and a heated steering wheel on higher trims. It also includes three-zone climate control, rear-seat air vents, and USB-C ports in every row.
2027 Subaru Getaway: All The Details
Three trims will be available at launch:
- Premium: Faux-leather upholstery, heated front seats, 19-inch wheels, and second-row captain’s chairs (six-passenger layout)
- Limited: Adds 20-inch wheels, heated steering wheel, heated second- and third-row seats, and optional seven-passenger configuration
- Touring: Nappa leather, panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon audio, and additional luxury touches
All versions come standard with Subaru's full suite of EyeSight driver-assistance features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring.
The 2027 Subaru Getaway is expected to reach dealerships in late 2026 as a 2027 model, with pricing details to be announced closer to launch. Early estimates suggest a starting price in the upper-$40,000 to mid-$50,000 range, positioning it at the top of Subaru's EV catalog.

This thing can Getaway from me. Yuck.
Three row seating, 300+ miles in a charge, quick charging, 3500 towing capability and 0 to 60 in just over five seconds. Sure I'm interested. Hopefully the photo isn't doing the design justice, as the flat white front end isn't exactly my cup of tea. Still if it retains the Subaru AWD system, which is superior, I'm interested.
