Volkswagen
The Volkswagen SUV lineup kicks off with the new-for-2022 Taos, which straddles the line between sub-compact and actual compact. Moving up there’s the Tiguan, one of the few compact crossovers available with a third row of seats. Need more space? The Atlas Cross Sport is a rakish two-row version of the brand’s mid-sized, three-row Atlas. Both Atlas are due to be heavily refreshed this year as well.
Slotting in somewhere around the Tiguan, at least by the measuring tape, is the all-electric ID.4. Volkswagen offers this charming and affordable EV in both rear- and all-wheel drive flavors. The next member of the all-electric family, the ID. Buzz, should arrive later this year. The Buzz finally makes good on VW’s long tease of a reborn Microbus, with funky looks and the same EV underpinnings we like in the ID.4.
Volkswagen hasn’t ditched the car segment. The Jetta remains, gaining the Taos’ engine as part of a 2022 refresh. The regular Golf hasn’t come to our shores this generation, but we do get the GTI and Golf R, both of which are more interesting and exciting, anyway. Volkswagen still offers the under-appreciated Arteon too, a mid-sized four-door coupe with a strong focus on design.
