This Is Volkswagen's Boldest Sedan In Years
Volkswagen is unveiling a new electric sedan developed specifically for the Chinese market. Called the ID. Unyx 09, the model reflects the company’s push to regain momentum.
The sedan was developed in partnership with Chinese automaker Xpeng, which also collaborated on the related ID. Unyx 08 crossover. Both vehicles are products of Volkswagen Anhui, the joint venture formed with JAC Motors, where Volkswagen holds a majority stake. The partnership has allowed the company to accelerate development timelines, with the ID. Unyx 09 reportedly reaching production-ready form in roughly two years.
Visually, the sedan shares little with Volkswagen’s global lineup. Its front end adopts a split lighting arrangement, with thin daytime running lights spanning the width of the fascia and framing an illuminated VW badge. A contrasting trim element runs across the bumper and into the fenders and doors, while the roofline, pillars, and mirror caps are finished in black.
The overall shape is lower and more restrained than the ID.7 sold in other markets, with a long wheelbase and a gently sloping roofline that suggests a focus on interior space without fully committing to a liftback design.
The ID. Unyx 09 rides on large wheels—21 inches in diameter—paired with performance-oriented tires and Brembo brakes, hinting at a more driver-focused approach than typical large electric sedans. Full technical details have not yet been released, but the model is expected to share its electric architecture with the Unyx 08, including high-voltage charging capability and multiple powertrain configurations.
The sedan slots into the upper end of Volkswagen’s China-specific lineup, where it could serve as a flagship offering alongside a range of locally tailored models.
