It’s the battle of the big SUVs here—two of the biggest, in fact.

It’s true: outside of the body-on-frame behemoths, not much is larger than the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander and Volkswagen Atlas. For those who need to haul six or seven people in relative comfort—and are deathly allergic to minivans—these are two of the best. The Toyota is all-new this year, addressing the most common criticism of the non-Grand Highlander: a tight way-back. Meanwhile the Atlas saw a substantial refresh, upping quality while trimming the powertrain options.

The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas family is big in more ways than one.

The largest VW on offer here in North America has been a sales hit, shifting almost half a million units in the US alone since its 2018 intro. (The Cross Sport arrived two years later.) It's also something of a profit machine for the brand, the sort of made-in-America success story the brand could use in a post-Dieselgate world.

Needless to say then, the 2024 edition does not mess with success. Call it optimization, with a simplified engine lineup, more standard features, and tweaked styling to keep the Atlas looking fresh. Just introduced at the New York International Auto Show is the brand-new 2024 Volkswagen Atla s Peak Edition. It’s a new trim that joins the equally new Atlas this year, inspired by the Basecamp Concept shown back in 2019.
