Subaru BRZ Overview
The 2026 Subaru BRZ is a rear-wheel drive sports car powered by a 2.4-liter Subaru Boxer engine that produces 228 horsepower. A 6-speed manual transmission and a Torsen limited-slip differential are standard on all trim levels, with a 6-speed automatic transmission available as an option on the Limited trim. For 2026, the lineup has been streamlined to include the Limited, tS, and a new Series.Yellow edition.
All models come equipped with EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, which includes features like Adaptive Cruise Control and Pre-Collision Braking, even on models with a manual transmission. The BRZ Limited trim features 18-inch matte gray alloy wheels and an interior with Ultrasuede and red leather accents. The tS trim is performance-focused, adding STI-tuned Hitachi dampers and a Brembo braking system with distinctive gold-painted calipers. It also features blue interior contrast stitching and STI branding elements.
What's New for 2026
For the 2026 model year, Subaru has discontinued the BRZ Premium trim level. The most significant update is the introduction of the limited-production BRZ Series.Yellow. Based on the tS trim, this edition features a "Sunrise Yellow" exterior, matte black 18-inch alloy wheels, and black badging. The interior includes black Ultrasuede upholstery with yellow contrast stitching on the seats, steering wheel, and door panels. Production of the Series.Yellow is limited to 350 units and it is available exclusively with a 6-speed manual transmission.
Pros | Pure driving joy, much improved torque curve, affordable fun |
Cons | Shifter still isn't as sweet as could be, bad infotainment, back seats still basically useless for people |
Bottom Line | Subaru and Toyota didn't have to do a second-generation BRZ/GR86; it's a niche car. But they did, and it improves on every aspect of the last one while keeping that sweet, lightweight, naturally-aspirated driving experience. |
Toyota GR86 vs Subaru BRZ vs Mazda MX-5 Miata: Simple Pleasures
We’re a practical bunch here at AutoGuide. We like when something serves dual purposes, like this three car comparison of the Toyota GR86 vs Subaru BRZ vs Mazda MX-5 Miata. It’s both a family rivalry and a rematch.
The last time we stuck the Toyota 86 (nee GR) up against the Mazda Miata, it was Mazda’s topless wonder that came out ahead. It was simply more fun. Toyota has thoroughly tweaked its two-door coupe on the way to its GR86 rebranding, dropping in a bigger-displacement engine, adding more creature comforts, modernizing the looks—and all the while, like the Miata, barely adding any weight.
But we couldn’t leave it at that. Since the introduction of the Toyobaru twins a decade ago, one of the most common questions is how the Toyota and Subaru iterations differ. So we brought along the BRZ too, to really get granular. A week with them all, between myself, managing editor Mike Schlee, and contributing writer (and photographer) Harry Zhou gave us the answers we were looking for.
