This change allows for the return of a third row, which remains a rarity at this size. 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid Quick Take: Checking the Box
After only a few rotations of its wheels its clear: the hybrid is the correct version of the 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe.
I drove the pure-ICE Santa Fe a few months back and found it a well-stocked, super-practical, right-sized family hauler. The turbo 2.5-liter is plenty muscular, and for the the slightly-more-off-roady XRT trim, it makes sense. Let’s be real though: most buyers will likely never explore anything more daunting than a cottage road, and for everything else, the improved fuel economy—and even manners—of the hybrid make it the smarter buy.

Since the Santa Fe kicked off Hyundai’s SUV lineup here in North America almost 25 years ago, never has it so closely resembled the shipping containers it arrived in. With Tucson and Palisade finding success on either side of it, the Santa Fe had a hard time standing out. For 2024 that’s no longer the case, as the Santa Fe has traded its sleek looks for straight lines and big volumes. The 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe has a boxier shape overall. The front, sides, and rear all appear to have relatively flat surfaces. But the looks are deceiving. The new Santa Fe is quite slippery in the wind.
All-new for the 2024 model year, the Santa Fe ditches the current model’s swoops, and curves for a more upright, angled shape. Larger than the vehicle it replaces, the new SUV also has a larger footprint.

2021 Hyundai Santa Fe Calligraphy Review: Oh You Fancy, Huh
The Hyundai Santa Fe is currently experiencing a bit of a Rodney Dangerfield moment.
Hyundai’s mid-mid-sizer, and original SUV on these shores, can’t get no respect. Above it sits the Palisade, a most-excellent three-row option that has been earning rave reviews since it released ( from AutoGuide included). Meanwhile, below it sits the 2022 Tucson, a radical rethink of the company’s best-seller, and arguably now the best option in the class.
Don’t count out the Santa Fe. A comprehensive revamp for this model year, not least of which is a wholly updated engine lineup, keeps it competitive against the likes of the Chevrolet Blazer, Ford Edge, and Subaru Outback. Even better, the Santa Fe now comes in a fancy-pants Calligraphy trim like its big brother, which adds a level of luxury that’s anything but common in this class.

2021 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid Review: Happier as a Hybrid
The Santa Fe has taken on many different roles in its two decades on our soil.
It was Hyundai’s first SUV for the North American market when it debuted in 2001. It remained the largest soft-roader offering until the unloved, three-row Veracruz debuted in 2007. When that disappeared, the Santa Fe grew an XL variant to accommodate. Then for this latest generation, debuting in 2019, the Santa Fe went back down to two rows. It was a pre-emptive move to make room for the excellent Palisade—which if we’re honest, overshadowed Hyundai’s longest-running SUV.
Just two years later, the Santa Fe now gets its own time in the spotlight with a comprehensive update. In come massaged looks, new gas engines, and a healthy round of tech improvements. More importantly, 2021 sees a hybrid model join the lineup for the first time—and thanks to a smart transmission choice, the hybrid has become an excellent all-rounder in its own right.

Hyundai Tucson vs Hyundai Santa Fe Comparison
The value-laden brand from Korea jumped on the SUV bandwagon nearly twenty years ago with the original Santa Fe. Priced thousands less than its main competition, it didn’t take long for the things to start cropping up along our roads like so much kudzu.
