Lexus NX – Review, Specs, Pricing, Features, Videos and More

They grow up so fast. It’s a battle of two different takes on the small luxury SUV: the BMW X1 vs Lexus NX350h.

The BMW X1 rolled onto the scene right near the end of the aughts. Here was a tiny high-rider on the vaunted 3 Series platform, essentially a Touring with altered proportions. The sophomore effort migrated to a front-drive Mini platform, which offended “enthusiasts” but made plenty of sense given the sub-compact space it competed in. Now here comes X1 version 3.0, again on a front-biased platform but growing in size and premium feel, enough to challenge the next class up.

That class includes the Lexus NX, which enjoyed a move to a second generation just a year ago. Slightly smaller than the X3 with which it competes, the NX is one of our preferred front-biased choices in this crowded segment. It’s handsome, easy to drive, feels properly luxurious and—in the hybrid form here—is very easy on the wallet in day-to-day activities.

You’re going to hear a lot of happy car journos today.

Never mind the new platform, the improved ride, or Lexus’ first plug-in hybrid. The biggest news about the 2022 Lexus NX lineup is the luxury brand mercifully ditching the infotainment touchpad. The skies parted, the sun shone a little brighter, and little winged people sang.

But make no mistake: you should pay attention to all those other changes, too. As the NX has matured into its second generation, it offers a more cohesive compact luxury crossover package.

To correct my esteemed colleague: many thousands of dollars is the price you pay for the solidity and economy of a Lexus NX. Lexus is not the first brand to be associated with things like excitement, driving pleasure, history or character. As Toyota’s premium badge, it is associated with reliability, build quality and safety…but it’s 2021 and so is just about every other leading brand.

Lexus has spent the last decade trying to shake that image. Lexus models used to be developed by independent engineers and teams working on individual models and the result, says Lexus Marketing VP Vijay Shahani, was “a bunch of different vehicles that felt different … there was no cohesive driving signature.” To change this, behold the “Lexus Driving Signature,” whose acronym LDS should play well in the Utah market.

It’s a question we get asked often: is a plug-in hybrid better than a regular hybrid? With the Lexus NX350h vs NX450h+, the answer is: it depends.

Lexus has finally revealed the 2022 NX crossover, and it looks like a far more serious competitor in a ruthless segment.

Not that the current model wasn’t a sales success. Even in its twilight years, and in the middle of a pandemic, the NX racked up 55,784 sales in America through 2020, and an additional 6,954 examples in Canada. That puts it right near the top of the class on either side of the border, and makes the NX a very important model for Lexus.

To that end, Lexus hasn’t rocked the boat with the design of the second-gen NX. More important are the changes under the hood and in the cabin. Lexus will be offering no less than four different engine options for the 2022 NX, including a more powerful turbo motor and the brand’s first plug-in hybrid. Meanwhile, the NX will feature an expanded suite of driver assists and a wholly revamped infotainment setup, with a massive 14-inch touchscreen available.
