Toyota 4Runner TRD Surf Concept Is The Only One That Matters

The Toyota 4Runner simply does not get cooler than this year’s SEMA concept.

The 4Runner TRD Surf Concept has it all, from retro graphics to a removable roof, to an incredible set of wheels and room (sorta) for a pair of surfboards. Toyota fabricated the removable roof in-house, which it says can be removed by a single person. Extensive work was also done to make the new two-door layout work, including functional windows.

This concept is also taller than a run-of-the-mill 4Runner, though its driveline is functionally unchanged from the production car. The lift comes courtesy of billet aluminum front upper and lower A-arms with custom front axles and a few choice bits lifted from the rear of the larger Tundra pickup. Those sweet retro wheels fit huge 37-inch tires as well.

Inside, the Surf gains a custom waterproofed interior and a telescoping passenger seat to grant passengers access to the rear seats. The surfboards are, of course, custom-made for the concept. While this SEMA project certainly won’t make it to production, it’s worth hoping Toyota takes note of how folks react to a two-door 4Runner with a removable roof — the Wrangler and the Bronco can’t be the only SUVs that look best with fewer doors.
