Mercedes Delivers All-Electric G 580 EQ Popemobile
Mercedes-Benz just delivered the latest Popemobile, an electrified G-Class tailored specifically for the Vatican.
The G-Wagen has faithfully served the last three Popes, including Francis. The new rig is based on the G 580 EQ, the custom open-air design was built for slow-moving public appearances and arrives just in time for the 2025 Jubilee.
2025 Mercedes G 580 EQ Popemobile: All The Details
The G 580 EQ's roof was removed at the B-pillar, and the B-pillar itself was smoothed into the side profile. Mercedes’ engineers also deleted the left rear opening, while the right rear door now swings open suicide-style to offer access to a raised platform.
The platform hosts a centrally positioned, height-adjustable swivel chair that lets Pope Francis face his audience from all angles. There are two jump seats and platforms for security detail. If it's raining, a detachable hardtop provides shelter without compromising sightlines to the Pontiff.
Like the previous Popemobiles, the vehicle is painted in classic pearl white.
Underneath the G 580 EQ is still a G 580 EQ—except the quad-motor all-wheel-drive system has been tuned for the glacial speeds required during ceremonial duties. Mercedes offered no details on what that meant exactly. The stock G 580 EQ packs a 116 kWh battery good for 579 horsepower and a whopping 859 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough to normally push it to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds.
This EV Popemobile continues a partnership between Mercedes and the Vatican that dates back to 1930 when Pope Pius XI took delivery of a Nürburg 460 Pullman.
