GM Expands Transmission Recall to Over 500,000 Vehicles

General Motors has expanded a prior recall for a potentially dangerous transmission defect, adding over 90,000 vehicles to the nearly half a million already affected. The issue, which could cause the wheels to lock up unexpectedly, now includes Cadillac sedans and the Chevrolet Camaro.
Key Points
The recall now affects over 500,000 vehicles, adding Cadillac CT4, CT5, CT6, and Chevrolet Camaro models to the previously affected full-size pickups and SUVs.
A faulty control valve in the 10-speed automatic transmission can wear prematurely, causing harsh shifts and, in severe cases, wheel lock-up while driving.
GM is rolling out a software update to detect wear 10,000 miles before failure, triggering a check engine light and limiting gears. Owner notifications begin April 21.
The latest recall includes 90,081 more vehicles equipped with GM's 10-speed automatic transmission. The Chevrolet Camaro makes up the majority of the tally, with 50,147 units from the 2020-2022 model year. Cadillac’s CT5 follows with 27,097 sedans from 2020-2021, along with 10,602 CT6 models from 2019-2020. The smallest portion belongs to the Cadillac CT4, with 2,235 vehicles from 2020-2021.
The problem stems from a control valve inside the transmission that can wear out prematurely, leading to pressure loss. This may cause harsh shifting, but in extreme cases, it can result in the wheels locking up. GM has documented 115 field reports of potential lock-ups, including one incident linked to an accident. No injuries have been reported.
The initial recall, issued in November 2024, only affected Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac full-size pickups and SUVs with diesel engines. It's unclear if there could be another round of recalls to include full-sizers with gasoline engines.
The fix remains the same: a software update that detects excess wear approximately 10,000 miles before a potential lock-up occurs. If the software detects the issue, it will trigger a check engine light and limit the transmission to a maximum of fifth gear until repairs are made—the defect is most likely to occur when the transmission attempts to downshift from eighth gear.
GM has already begun notifying dealers about the recall, with owner notifications set to begin on April 21.

Our 2023 CT5 has trans problems. Every once in awhile you feel that shudder when down shifting from 10th to 9th gear. Same shudder as our old 2017 8 speed transmission. GM has yet to own up to these issues. Highly disappointed!!
Be cautious with chevy , second vehicle assumed different experiences if I purchase a new vehicle. Absolutely not shift gear and transmission failure at 32000 miles. Chevy will not reimburse entire rental vehicle payment while they wait for parts and then a new engine. Warranty is a fluke next year car will paid off will sale and enjoy my new vehicle (BMW)
