EXCLUSIVE: Mazda Trademarks New Logo

Mazda has recently been granted a trademark in Japan for a new corporate logo.


The updated design remains closely linked to Mazda's current winged M logo, which has been in use since 1997. The new trademarked logo features a shift from the previous oval shape to a more rounded, circular form. Additionally, the wings of the M now have a more uniform line thickness, and the logo adopts a flat, two-dimensional appearance by eliminating the shadowy beveling. A similar flat logo was seen on the Mazda Arata, an EV design concept model shown by Changan Mazda at Auto China 2024 back in April.

Mazda's new logo was trademarked on July 22, 2024.

The trademark was filed by Mazda Motor Corporation in Japan, and it's thought this new design could be part of a global rebrand. However, it remains unclear whether the new logo will be used as badging on vehicles or reserved exclusively for corporate purposes. Mazda representatives did not respond to requests for comment before publication.


This move follows in the footsteps of Korean competitor Kia, which undertook a significant rebrand in 2021. While Kia's new logo received criticism for its design—particularly for the stylized I and A that appear to blend into an N—the rebrand has coincided with notable product and sales success. Mazda's rebrand appears to be less radical, but the company will hope for similar positive outcomes in terms of market performance.
