Toyota Trademarks a Mysterious New Sports Car Logo

Toyota pairs GR with GT, but what could it mean?

Hello there, GR GT. The sleuths around the AutoGuide offices have uncovered a new trademark filing from Toyota. The logo pairs the brand's GR sports label with possibly the two most popular letters for sporty cars: GT. And that's all we know—so we've put together a few guesses.

The first idea is the on-again, off-again concept of a dedicated GR flagship hypercar. The Super Sport concept of 2018 was meant as a 1,000-horsepower hybrid race car for the road. Unfortunately, after reports suggested a prototype crash ended the program back in 2021, we've heard nary a peep about the Super Sport since. It could be this, or an evolution of the concept.

Slightly less likely, but in the same vein: Toyota could be rebranding its current Le Mans Hypercar model. Another potential name change could be for the GR86, which stands apart from the rest of the global GR lineup with its lack of space between Gazoo Racing's initials and the model itself.

We're going to think even more laterally: this might not be for a car at all. Toyota is a very active partner in the Gran Turismo online racing world. The sim racing title even has a dedicated Gazoo Racing GT Cup which runs alongside its other yearly competitions. Toyota may be strengthening that branding in Europe, which has historically been the biggest market for Sony's sim racer.
