Ford is recalling 149,449 Bronco SUVs due to a potential suspension defect that could result in rear dampers detaching.
The recall affects 2021–2024 Bronco Badlands and Sasquatch models, which are equipped with remote-reservoir dampers that may corrode over time.
According to Ford's submission to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on January 25, approximately 30 percent of the affected vehicles may develop this issue. Corrosion between the reservoir, mounting flange, and damper body can cause a buildup of pressure, potentially leading to weld failure and separation of the reservoir tube. Symptoms include excessive bouncing, unusual noises, and in extreme cases, the reservoir breaking free from its mount.
The issue first came to NHTSA's attention in October 2024, when four owners reported problems with the rear dampers, three of whom claimed the remote reservoirs detached. Ford launched its own investigation in November and determined that the long-flange design used in these dampers was particularly vulnerable to corrosion.
As a result, newer Bronco Badlands and Sasquatch models have switched to a short-flange damper that is less prone to failure.
At this time, Ford has not announced a definitive repair plan for vehicles already on the road. The company has stated that it is working on a fix, but owners of affected Broncos will be notified by mail starting February 7, 2025.
