Instrument Clusters In Some Audis Shutting Off Unexpectedly

Audi is recalling 44,387 vehicles in the United States due to an issue that could cause the digital instrument cluster—known as the Virtual Cockpit—to shut off unexpectedly.

The fault affects a wide range of 2021 model year vehicles, including the A6, A7, A8, Q7, Q8, and several S and RS performance models.

According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue stems from potential damage to a flat cable within the digital cluster. Even minor damage to this cable can increase contact resistance, which in turn can cause the screen to power down. If that happens, drivers lose access to critical vehicle data, including speed, engine RPM, and gear selection.

Models affected by the recall include 2021 versions of the A6, A7, A8, Q7, Q8, RS6 Avant, RS7, RS Q8, S6, S7, S8, A6 Allroad, SQ7, and SQ8, all produced between July 2020 and May 2021. Audi plans to notify owners of the recall beginning May 30, 2025. Dealers will update the software to prevent the display from shutting off due to small fluctuations in cable contact resistance.

The Virtual Cockpit has long been one of Audi’s signature interior technologies, but this issue shows one of the huge risks associated with moving away from analog instrumentation. As more automakers shift to fully digital displays, system reliability will increasingly become a focus for regulators.
