The Nissan Versa continues to be a low-cost option in the subcompact sedan segment, with a starting MSRP of just $17,190 for the S model with a manual transmission. Powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine producing 122 horsepower, the Versa is offered with either a 5-speed manual (S only) or Nissan’s Xtronic continuously variable transmission, which delivers up to 35 mpg combined. The interior offers class-leading front headroom and legroom, a 7-inch infotainment display (8-inch on SR), and available Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

Standard safety features across all trims include Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Rear Automatic Braking, and High Beam Assist. Higher trims add Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Intelligent Cruise Control. The SR trim also includes heated front seats, unique upholstery, and 17-inch wheels.

What’s New for 2025

For 2025, the Versa adds LED headlights with signature lighting to the S and SV trims. It also now includes the Nissan Maintenance Care program, which covers up to three scheduled oil changes over two years or 24,000 miles. Pricing for the lineup tops out at $21,190 for the Versa SR.

There aren’t a lot of cars that start under $20,000 these days. There are even less that slip under that bar when fully loaded.

Now admittedly, the 2023 Nissan Versa SR only sort of qualifies: in the US, it has an MSRP of $19,820, but the mandatory destination fee bumps that to $20,915. And in Canada, you’re looking at $24,683 CAD for this particular tester.

Still, that makes the Versa one of the most affordable new cars on the market, and less than half the price of the average new car purchase these days. With a fresh round of updates for 2023, is Nissan’s affordable option worth skipping the used car market, or opting for a larger, more expensive car? I spent a week with one to find out.

Nissan could have left things as they were in the current SUV-friendly market and not completely overhauled the Versa.

But we’re glad it did. It just gives people like us who still adore cars a ray of hope. North of the border here in Canada, all we got was the Versa Note, the hatch version of the sedan which passed on to the history books in 2012. While the entry-level baton passed on to the Micra next in 2014, the sedan spot sat empty. The 2021 Nissan Versa is the first Versa sedan ever to be sold in Canada and is the first completely new Versa in the US since 2011.

Entry-level it might be, but it certainly does not look ordinary.
