2022 Mazda CX-5 2.5 S Carbon Edition Review: Quick Take
Recently, we held a massive 2022 AutoGuide Compact SUV Comparison test presented by NRS Brakes. We are now going to take a closer look at one of the stronger finishers, the 2022 Mazda CX-5 2.5 S Carbon Edition.
Age is a strange thing. Despite being roughly as old as the outgoing Honda CR-V, the second gen Mazda CX-5 still looks and feels contemporary. Whereas the Honda is in desperate need of an overhaul, the Mazda still seems fresh, which is due in no small part to the slew of updates it has received for 2022.
Among the changes are a redesigned grille, new LED headlights and taillights, new aluminum alloy wheels, updated seats and Mazda intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive), a new drive select switch that debuts with the ’22 CX-5.

Welcome to the single most important comparison we will have all year. The AutoGuide 2022 Best Small SUV Comparison sponsored by NRS Brakes.
The average family car these days isn’t even a car at all anymore. Compact SUVs are the sweet spot these days, selling thousands of examples every single day in Canada and the United States. So we’ve assembled 11 of them, from all corners of the market, to figure out which one is best. Yes, eleven. Go big or go home, they say. It’s time for AutoGuide 2022 Best Small SUV Comparison.
This group covers all the big hitters, including the segment-leading Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. Mazda sent us two SUVs, in the shapes of the subtly different CX-5 and CX-50. More rugged options like the Ford Bronco Sport and Jeep Compass are here, too. Amongst the pack are of course a few hybrids as well. If you’re shopping this part of the market, at least a few of these SUVs will be on your short list.
2022 Mazda CX-5 Review: For Those Who Think Young
The Mazda CX-5 has had a reputation as the driver’s choice in the segment since it debuted over a decade ago.
Not just marketing spin from the formerly Zoom-Zoom brand, the CX-5’s status is deserved. Where other compact crossovers are languid, the Mazda is lively. A steady march up the sales charts confirms buyers are picking up what the CX-5 is putting down.
The 2022 Mazda CX-5 doesn’t shake up that formula. In the face of new and revised competitors, the Japanese brand has treated its best-seller to a thoughtful round of improvements, making it more refined and better-equipped. For drivers who still want a dash of spice in their eminently practical life, this is the SUV to have.
Mazda has gently massaged the CX-5 package for 2022. Nothing dramatic, but in that typical Mazda way, the result is greater than the sum of its parts.
Mazda CX-5 vs Hyundai Tucson: Which Compact SUV is Right for You?
For many families, the choice vehicle to handle day-to-day duties has become the compact SUV.
With ample space for a family of four or five, adequate cargo capacity, all-weather capability, and acceptable fuel economy, these vehicles really put the utility in sport utility vehicle. Two popular choices in the segment are the Hyundai Tucson and the Mazda CX-5.
All new for the 2022 model year, the Hyundai Tucson is now in its fourth generation of existence, with a lineage dating back over 15 years. Although the Mazda CX-5 nameplate hasn’t been around as long, the current generation of the CX-5 has been on sale longer; since the 2017 model year. However, the vehicle did receive a refresh for the 2022 model year with revised styling and added technology.
To see how the two models now stack up, we’ve lined them up side-by-side and dug deep into the specifications and features.
Mazda CX-5 vs Nissan Rogue Comparison: Heart and Head
As much as we sometimes like to think the compact crossover landscape is all the same, the Mazda CX-5 and Nissan Rogue are about as different as the breed gets.
Mazda refreshed the CX-5 for 2022, tweaking its styling and upping its technology quotient. What hasn’t changed is the driver appeal, the kernel of Miata-ness that permeates every touchpoint. Making the inevitable switch to a crossover, but need something that still reminds you driving can be fun? Mazda’s got that on lock.
The Nissan Rogue has its own approach. Redone for 2021 (and with a new engine for 2022), the Rogue is a four-wheeled fixer, here to smooth over any of the myriad little bumps of daily life. If people aren’t buying the best tools for the job— yep, it’s still minivans—then adapting what they are buying to better suit them is an approach we understand.
