2022 Ford F-150 Tremor Review: Diet Dino
One of the freeing things about being an adult is eating whatever you want, whenever you want. Yet just because you can, doesn’t always mean you should.
Take the Ford F-150 Raptor. The eight-foot-wide baja-blasting pickup is one big box of Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs. Capable of the sort of fun that leaves your whole body humming? Sure. Yet unless your daily commute involves beating sand dunes into submission, a steady diet of Ford’s big dinosaur can be overkill.
The 2022 Ford F-150 Tremor is part of a more balanced breakfast. It’s still capable off the paved stuff, but doesn’t sacrifice as much of the real-world usability that makes the F-150 such a titan of the industry.
With the latest 14th-generation F-150, the Tremor slots into the off-roading branch of the F-150’s vast trim tree, somewhere above the FX4 package, but stopping shy of the full-fat Raptor. Viewed within the context of the wider range, it’s somewhere between a Lariat and King Ranch. So the Tremor isn’t some stripped-out truck, but rather a well-equipped one.

It also comes with the eTorque system. The F-150 Lariat is the one you take to a construction site while the Ram is the one you want to arrive at a dinner party in. But is that strictly true?

The Raptor has found its roar.
There are many impressive aspects of the 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor. The truck that signalled a direction change for the industry remains supremely talented off-road, especially the high-speed stuff. It’s still enormous, too. This new model sounds better now, a growl in tune with its conquer-everything attitude.
The Raptor can’t match the shock and awe of the 702-horsepower Ram 1500 TRX. But in the realm of ultimate off-roader pickups, the F-150 Raptor banks on its all-rounder status, lighter and nimbler, with a new rear suspension doing the heavy lifting (no pun intended). Combine that with the slew of interior upgrades brought in with the fourteenth-generation F-150, and the Raptor has never been better.

For over two decades, the popular image of a hybrid has been that of a compact camped in the passing lane driving slower than the speed limit.
Indeed, while keeping speeds down does stretch each gallon of refined dead dinosaur as far as possible, it’s given hybrids a bad name among those not specifically focused on efficiency. The technology behind those trendsetting hybrids, however, has trickled down into nearly every market segment—from mild hybrids that simply have a start/stop function to save a few thimbles of fuel while stopped at a traffic light, to supercars taking advantage of the near-instant torque of an electric motor to launch off the line.
Perhaps that’s why Ford has chosen to not outwardly label its latest 2021 Ford F-150 Powerboost as a hybrid—though that’s exactly what this truck is. Rather than a focus on supreme fuel economy, this truck is meant for what we think of a truck for: work.

Toyota has finally updated the Tundra, with hybrid power no less, and that puts the F-150 square in its sights.
It’s honestly a little surprising it’s taken so long for Toyota, the company known for hybrids, to add battery power to its pickup. The Ford F-150 did it first, introducing the PowerBoost model last year. Now both trucks feature turbocharged 3.5-liter V6s with plenty of electron-assisted torque.

It might be a size smaller compared to the F-150 but it is as capable and sometimes more suited to a situation than its full-size elder brother.
