The 2026 Subaru Outback Will Debut Next Week—Here's What To Expect

Subaru is preparing to unveil the redesigned 2026 Outback at the New York Auto Show next week. With the discontinuation of the Legacy, the next-generation Outback is free to adopt a more rugged, SUV-like stance, moving away from its classic raised-wagon silhouette.

The solo teaser image seems to indicate the Outback will get more angular and boxier, including squared-off wheel arches. We expect that it will also come with a higher hood and a larger grille, drawing design inspiration from the redone Forester.


It also looks like there's a flatter roofline and a more vertical, SUV-style rear hatch. Subaru said it will also reveal the 2026 Outback Wilderness at the same time—in fact, it looks like the Wilderness is the model teased in the photo.


Inside, the 2026 Outback will likely gain a redesigned digital cockpit with a larger infotainment display and upgraded tech borrowed from the latest Forester that debuted earlier this year. The Outback will likely continue to offer Subaru’s EyeSight driver assistance system, which will be upgraded to keep pace with the latest advancements in ADAS technology no doubt.

Under the hood, we're likely to see the Outback gain a similar hybrid system as the Forester. Combining Subaru's 2.5-liter flat-four engine with a 118-hp electric motor. For those who prefer traditional powertrains, the 2026 Outback will likely continue to offer the familiar 2.5-liter flat-four and 2.4-liter turbocharged engine options, both paired with Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD system and a CVT.
