Kia Recalls Over 80,000 Niro Models In The U.S.
Kia has issued a recall for 80,225 Niro models in the United States due to a potential wiring issue under the front passenger seat.
The issue could compromise airbag functionality and seatbelt pretensioner operation, posing a significant safety risk for passengers.
The recall stems from a design flaw where the floor wiring assembly beneath the passenger seat may be damaged if the seat is repeatedly moved forward and backward. This damage could lead to critical safety concerns, including airbags and pretensioners failing to activate in a crash; and inability to suppress passenger airbag deployment for smaller occupants, such as children, or accidental deployment of the passenger airbag when the vehicle is not involved in a crash.
Models Affected
The recall covers the following Kia Niro vehicles:
- 2023-2025 Niro EVs built between August 10, 2022, and December 13, 2024.
- 2023-2025 Niro Hybrids manufactured from June 21, 2022, to December 17, 2024.
- 2023-2025 Niro Plug-In Hybrids produced between July 11, 2022, and December 16, 2024.
Kia has confirmed that models equipped with electronically adjustable passenger seats are not affected.
The issue first came to Kia’s attention in November 2024, following a field report describing damage to the wiring assembly and the activation of an airbag warning light. The automaker identified the root cause as inconsistencies in the routing of the floor wiring assembly.
While no accidents or injuries have been reported, Kia has acknowledged receiving four warranty claims related to the defect.
Owners of affected Niro models will be notified starting in March. Kia dealers will inspect the floor wiring assembly for damage, replace any damaged wiring, and reroute the wiring, and install additional protective coverings to prevent future issues.
