Toyota’s fastback-styled crossover-sedan hybrid enters the 2027 model year with notable mechanical updates and some technological enhancements. Combining the elevated ride height of a crossover with the traditional silhouette of a full-size sedan, the updated Toyota Crown focuses on refining its core hybrid drivetrains and expanding standard features across all trim levels.

What’s New for 2027

The key updates for the 2027 model year focus on driver engagement, updated hybrid architecture, and trickled-down technology. For starters, there's the addition of the Fifth-Generation Toyota Hybrid System (THS 5). The primary hybrid powertrain across the XLE, Limited, and Nightshade trims upgrades to Toyota’s latest fifth-generation architecture, optimizing efficiency and power delivery. To provide greater control over simulated gear steps, manual paddle shifters are now standard equipment on the XLE, Limited, and Nightshade grades.

In the aesthetics department, exterior revisions include a sculpted rear bumper and premium glossy black accents. A new paint color, Inked (a glossy black finish), joins the palette.

The mid-tier Limited grade gains standard equipment previously reserved for option packages or top trims, including a Panoramic View Monitor, Traffic Jam Assist, and Digital Key capability.

Powertrains and Engineering Performance

The 2027 Toyota Crown lineup retains a two-tier powertrain strategy tailored to different driver priorities. The standard hybrid powertrain on the XLE, Limited and Nightshade now uses the Fifth-Generation Toyota Hybrid System which delivers enhanced torque management and a more responsive throttle response. Paired with standard electronically controlled all-wheel drive and paddle shifters, the revised system addresses previous complaints regarding CVT elastic feel under hard acceleration.

The Platinum trim comes exclusively with the Hybrid MAX powertrain (a carryover). Combining a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine with a direct-drive front electric motor and a rear eAxle, it continues to output 340 horsepower. Power is managed through a direct 6-speed automatic transmission, while standard Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) regulates body motion across varying road surfaces.
