Subaru just pulled the cover off the updated 2026 Solterra EV at the New York International Auto Show. The rework introduces a series of performance, range, and technology improvements to its all-electric SUV, which mirror what we've seen from its siblings, the Toyota bZ4x and Lexus RZ.

Key Points

  • The 2026 Subaru Solterra receives a 25% range increase, now offering over 285 miles from a 74.7-kWh battery with improved charging up to 150 kW.
  • A new XT trim adds a dual-motor setup with 338 horsepower and sub-5-second 0–60 mph acceleration.
  • All models gain updated styling, a new 14-inch infotainment screen, and standard NACS charging access to Tesla’s Supercharger network.

The most obvious change to the 2026 Solterra is the styling revisions. Subaru says the Solterra and the new Trailseeker debut the company's new EV lighting signature, including an illuminated logo and redesigned headlamps joined by a new front bumper design. Subaru says certain paint colors will get body-color fenders for a sleeker, urban look, but two-tone configurations will still be available.

The changes are less dramatic in the rear—the Subaru emblem is replaced by block text, and there's a redesigned spoiler treatment. There are also newly designed 20- and 18-inch wheel choices.

For 2026, the Solterra now features a 74.7-kWh lithium-ion battery, pushing estimated range beyond 285 miles—an increase of more than 25 percent over the original. Toyota rolled out a new battery preconditioning system earlier this year—it's designed to maintain optimal charging temperatures in colder climates—helping the Solterra charge from 10 to 80 percent in under 35 minutes when using a DC fast charger.

Charging speeds of up to 150 kW are supported, and the inclusion of a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port provides access to Tesla’s Supercharger network.

Subaru says the dual-motor setup has been reworked with improved controllers for better power distribution and more responsive traction management. The base model now produces 233 horsepower thanks to more powerful front and rear motors.

There's a new XT trim offering 338 horsepower—same as the Toyota bZ4X. Subaru claims the XT will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under five seconds.

All versions of the Solterra continue to offer Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and include the brand’s X-MODE terrain management system with modes for snow, dirt, and mud. Ground clearance remains at 8.3 inches, which Subaru says is best in class among small electric SUVs. Small updates to the suspension and electric power steering round out the mechanical changes.

Inside, the Solterra gains a new 14-inch multimedia screen as standard equipment, compatible with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. New, wireless 15W smartphone chargers for the driver and front passenger are standard equipment, while rear passengers get high-output USB-C ports. Subaru’s EyeSight driver assistance suite is also included.

The 2026 Solterra is expected to arrive at dealers later this year, with detailed pricing and trim specifications promised closer to market launch.
