Premium Sporty Car
This year, no vehicle scored higher than the Porsche 911, which many see as the quintessential European sports car. The only other vehicle to earn enough points in the Premium Sporty Car segment for a callout was the Chevrolet Corvette, which, interestingly enough, is often cited as the 911’s biggest rival.
Small Premium Car
The Acura Integra and BMW 2 Series took first and second place, respectively, in the Small Premium Car segment. The Integra shares much of its underpinnings with the well-regarded Honda Civic, while the BMW 2 Series is offered in both two-door Coupe and four-door Gran Coupe styles. The two versions could hardly be more different, with the Coupe riding on a rear-wheel-drive platform and the Gran Coupe sharing its platform with several front- and all-wheel-drive cars and crossovers from BMW and Mini.
Compact Premium Car
In the Compact Premium Car segment, the Lexus IS took first, the Genesis G70 came second and Cadillac CT4 landed in third. There are rumors that the Lexus IS may not carry on much longer. The Genesis G70 was first introduced for the 2019 model year, and the CT4 replaced the aging ATS in 2020. While longevity on the market tends to increase quality scores, it also often means the cars in the segment aren’t exactly hot sellers.
Midsize Premium Car
The Lexus ES earned top honors in the Midsize Premium Car segment and was the only vehicle to earn enough points to qualify for an award in the segment. Expect a brand-new Lexus ES sedan to debut in the United States soon, likely for the 2026 model year. The Mercedes-Benz CLE (first), Mercedes-Benz E-Class (second) and Genesis G80 (third) earned awards in the Upper Midsize Premium Car segment.
Sporty Car
In the Sporty Car (not premium) category, the Ford Mustang took top honors, followed by the Toyota 86. The 86 is mechanically related to the Subaru BRZ, for some reason, the Subie didn’t get a mention in the rankings. Considering how similar the two cars are under the skin, we’d wager that both should earn equal marks in Initial Quality.
Compact Car
The top-ranked Compact Car was the Nissan Sentra, followed by the Kia K4 and Hyundai Elantra.
Midsize Car
In the Midsize Car segment, the Nissan Altima took the victory over the Chevrolet Malibu and Hyundai Sonata, which tied for second.
