The Nissan Z Has Finally Outsold The Toyota Supra
The Nissan Z has finally outsold its closest rival, the Toyota Supra.
In 2024, after years of slow production ramp-up, Nissan delivered 3,164 Zs in the U.S. last year, surpassing the Supra’s 2,615 sales. It marks a reversal of fortunes for the Z, which lagged behind the Supra by nearly 1,000 sales in 2023.
The Z's affordability likely played a key role in its success, with a base price of $44,110 compared to the Supra’s $57,385. Toyota’s recent discontinuation of the four-cylinder Supra further widens the price gap. Additionally, Nissan introduced a high-performance 420-horsepower Nismo variant in late 2023, bolstering interest in the Z lineup.
While the Supra has remained largely unchanged since its 2019 debut, Toyota did add a manual transmission option and a 45th Anniversary special edition last year. However, the Z’s fresher, albeit retro design and aggressive pricing have made it a compelling alternative.
Despite this milestone, the Z's sales are a mere drop in the bucket compared to the Ford Mustang, which had an off year, selling only 44,003 units in 2024.
