Mazda Dreams Of RWD Mazda6 Replacement
Mazda hasn’t entirely closed the door on reviving the Mazda6 as a rear-wheel-drive sedan.
Of course, there's no strategy play without consumer demand—what doesn't depend on consumer demand these days? While Mazda has previously stated that its lineup of SUVs, like the CX-60 and CX-90, would take the place of traditional sedans—which we all know is a lie— recent comments from Kohei Shibata, Mazda’s Large Product Group program manager, provide a beacon of hope.
In an interview with Australia's Drive Magazine, Shibata noted, “Personally, a FR [front-engined, rear-wheel-drive] sedan would be a good dream for everyone... if people start to buy that kind of vehicle, then that will let us make that vehicle.”
Essentially, Mazda likes the idea of a rear-wheel-drive successor to the 6, but only if global demand for sedans rebounds. The only problem is, that manufacturers across the globe are turning to SUVs and Crossovers as an easy way to pull more profit margin. So what's the key metric?
Mazda’s cautious stance is understandable. While sedans like Toyota’s Corolla and Camry continue to thrive, other attempts at sporty, premium sedans—like the Kia Stinger—have struggled to find widespread success. Given the current SUV-dominated market, a six-cylinder, rear-wheel-drive Mazda6 could face the same challenges.
The problem always seems to lie in the marketing—people don't necessarily care which end of their vehicle drives the wheels. I will all but guarantee that 95% of the car-buying public has very little care for "sporty" dynamics, so if athleticism is the hook Mazda wants to hang its hat on, then this project has already failed.
Mazda discontinued the Mazda6 in the United States after the 2021 model year with the company citing shifting consumer preferences toward SUVs and crossovers as the primary reason for the decision.
Globally, the Mazda6 remained available in some markets, including Japan, for a time. However, Mazda officially ended production of the Mazda6 in Japan in early 2023. For now, Mazda’s Large Product Group remains focused on SUVs, with models like the CX-70 and CX-90 taking center stage. A true Mazda6 successor was never part of the plan, nor was a large sports coupe some fans might have hoped for.
