Audi Announces Another New Naming Scheme

Audi is once again changing the way it names cars.

In March 2023, the company announced it would assign even numbers to EVs and odd numbers to internal combustion vehicles. Well, less than two years later Audi has decided to return to its traditional way of labeling cars.

From now on, the numbers in Audi’s lineup will once again indicate a vehicle’s size, rather than its power source—the change comes following negative feedback from customers and dealerships since Audi announced the original change.

Fully electric cars will be labeled with the e-Tron suffix, while gasoline models will get TFSI, plug-in hybrids TFSIe, and diesels TDI. The naming plan kicks off with the next-generation A6, which won't become the A7 as originally announced in November.

The upcoming combustion-powered A6 will debut on March 4—while the electric A6 e-Tron will remain a separate entity. Audi will keep “A” designations for cars and “Q” for crossovers, and this will only apply to new models moving forward. The company won't retroactively change the names of vehicles it already changed.

The company had previously outlined a goal to transition to exclusively electric vehicles by 2033, but it now seems to be leaving room for combustion engines beyond that timeframe.
