Hyundai revealed the second-generation Nexo at the 2025 Seoul Mobility Show. The hydrogen-powered SUV gets a restyled exterior and updated fuel-cell drivetrain. Its design closely mirrors the Initium concept shown last fall.

Key Points

  • Hyundai has unveiled the second-generation Nexo, featuring a redesigned body and a more powerful 201-hp hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain with a targeted range of over 430 miles.
  • Interior updates include dual 12.3-inch displays, AI-powered voice controls, and added comfort features like reclining front seats with leg rests and increased rear passenger space.
  • The 2026 Nexo is unlikely to return to widespread U.S. sales and is expected to launch later this year in select global markets.

Under the skin, Hyundai reworked the Nexo’s hydrogen fuel-cell stack for better performance and durability, particularly in colder conditions. The front-mounted electric motor now produces 201 horsepower, a considerable increase from the outgoing model's 161 hp. Hyundai claims a 0–62 mph time of 7.8 seconds, but honestly, who cares? That's not what it's for.

The 2026 Nexo also gets a larger hydrogen tank, which, combined with powertrain improvements, allows for a projected driving range of over 430 miles. A tow rating of up to 2,205 pounds adds modest utility.

The cabin follows Hyundai’s recent interior layout philosophy, with a wide dashboard housing dual 12.3-inch screens. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with a voice command system backed by generative AI. Optional equipment includes a Bang & Olufsen audio system, head-up display, and camera-based side mirrors in select markets.

Hyundai has also added convenience features aimed at long-haul comfort. The front seats recline and include ventilated cushions and leg rests, while rear-seat users benefit from increased space and wider-opening doors. Cargo capacity is rated at 35 cubic feet with the second row in use or up to 61 cubic feet with the seats folded.

Hyundai notes that the new Nexo can accommodate four golf bags—a brand after my heart—but so can my 2007 Grand Marquis.

Despite the updates, it remains unlikely that the 2026 Nexo will find a real place of release in the U.S. The outgoing model was only ever offered in California, so expect at least the same—where else are you going to get hydrogen fuel?
