'Ultimate Build' Nissan Frontier Debuts at 2026 Overland Expo
When the off-road team at the Overland Expo needed a truck for its annual “Ultimate Build,” it chose the Nissan Frontier PRO-4X as the starting point. This year’s build turns the midsize pickup into a dedicated overlanding rig with a long list of aftermarket upgrades aimed at off-road travel and camping.
“It’s no surprise that the Frontier makes a great base for overlanding, as Nissan has decades of history building tough, off-road-capable vehicles that take drivers way beyond the pavement,” said Marco Fioravanti, vice president, product planning, Nissan U.S. and Canada. “Frontier PRO-4X is built to work hard and tackle nearly any terrain, right from the factory. And with 92% of Frontiers sold in the last decade still on the road, drivers have confidence their vehicle has the durability to get them through their next adventure.”
The Nissan Frontier Ultimate Build will make its public debut at Overland Expo West, running May 15–17, 2026, in Flagstaff. After that, the truck is expected to appear at other Overland Expo events, industry gatherings, and media drives.
To prepare the Frontier for overlanding — long-distance off-road travel that often includes camping and self-sufficient gear — the build adds several aftermarket components. Upgrades include NISMO rock sliders, a heavy-duty winch, auxiliary lighting, and a bed-mounted pop-up camper, among other additions.
“The Frontier PRO-4X is one of the most honest overland platforms on the market,” said Anthony Sicola, Ultimate Vehicle Build project manager, Overland Expo. “It doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not – and that’s exactly why it works so well. It’s capable, comfortable and adaptable, which makes it a perfect canvas for long-term overland travel.”
The production Nissan Frontier comes with a 3.8-liter V6 engine producing 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque. Nissan claims the USA-built engine is designed to balance power and durability for truck owners who use their vehicles both on and off the road.
The PRO-4X trim adds equipment aimed at trail driving, including Bilstein suspension components, skid plates, 17-inch alloy wheels, Hankook Dynapro AT2 all-terrain tires, and an electronic locking rear differential. It’s also available with Nissan’s Intelligent Around View Monitor with Off-Road Mode, which can operate at speeds up to 12 mph to help drivers navigate rough terrain.
