With SUVs and crossovers now accounting for roughly 60 percent of new vehicle sales in the U.S., it’s no surprise that Consumer Reports’ latest list of top vehicles for 2026 is dominated by utility vehicles. What stands out this year, however, is a clear trend: every SUV on the list offers a hybrid variant.

The organization’s latest rankings highlight five models that not only earned strong road-test scores, but also secured the coveted “Recommended” rating—a combination of performance, reliability, and owner satisfaction. While the list leans heavily on familiar favorites, there are a few notable changes compared to last year.

Subaru and Toyota lead the pack with two entries each, while BMW shows up as the lone European contender. While no Detroit-based automakers made the cut, most of these vehicles are still built right here in North America.

Best Subcompact SUV: 2026 Subaru Crosstrek

The Subaru Crosstrek remains one of the most affordable options on the list, starting just under $30,000. While its 2.5-liter engine and CVT won’t thrill enthusiasts, standard all-wheel drive and solid fuel economy make it a practical choice. It also continues to be Subaru’s top seller in the U.S.

Best Compact SUV: 2026 Subaru Forester

The Forester, positioned just above the Crosstrek, offers similar mechanicals but more space and versatility. Its newly introduced hybrid variant improves both fuel economy and performance, helping it climb to the top of Consumer Reports’ compact SUV rankings.

Best Midsize SUV: 2026 Toyota Grand Highlander

Toyota’s Grand Highlander continues to gain traction as a three-row family hauler. Consumer Reports describes it as a “near-perfect people mover,” thanks to its roomy interior, strong reliability ratings, and available hybrid powertrains.

The hybrid versions, in particular, stand out for their efficiency with fuel economy figures reaching into the mid-30 mpg range.

Best Luxury Compact SUV: 2026 Lexus NX

The Lexus NX represents Toyota’s luxury side. While the gas-powered version performs well, it’s the hybrid model that takes top honors in the compact luxury SUV segment. With up to 40 mpg combined, it blends efficiency with premium comfort in a way almost no other automaker can match right now.

Best Luxury Midsize SUV: 2026 BMW X5

At the higher end of the market, the BMW X5 continues to impress the crew at Consumer Reports. The outfit calls the X5 one of the best luxury SUVs it has ever tested, with specific callouts for its performance, refinement, and overall driving experience.

The plug-in hybrid version adds another layer of appeal, offering nearly 40 miles of electric-only range while boosting total output to over 480 horsepower. It’s also the only PHEV included on this year’s list.
