Alfa Romeo Tonale – Review, Specs, Pricing, Features, Videos and More

Joining the hot luxury compact SUV segment is the new Alfa Romeo Tonale. Designed as a sportier offering, the Tonale looks to battle the likes of the Audi Q3, BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA, Volvo XC40.
Unlike those competitors, the Tonale will initially be offered with just a single drivetrain. It’s a small 1.3-liter turbocharged engine partnered up with a plug-in hybrid set up. Despite the small displacement, there is still a healthy 350 lb-ft. of torque on tap.

Alfa Romeo Tonale Overview
The 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale is a compact luxury SUV designed to compete with models like the BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and Volvo XC40. Offered exclusively as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) in the U.S., the Tonale combines performance with premium features.
The PHEV powertrain features a 1.3-liter turbocharged engine paired with front and rear electric motors, delivering a combined output of 285 horsepower and 347 lb-ft of torque. It achieves a 0-60 mph time of about six seconds and provides over 30 miles of all-electric range, powered by a 15.5 kWh battery. A six-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive enhance performance.
Inside, the Tonale prioritizes a driver-focused design with premium materials, including aluminum accents and available leather or Alcantara seats. Technology features include a 10.25-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a digital gauge cluster, and a suite of standard safety features such as adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist.
On the road, the Tonale excels in low-end torque and handling, particularly in Dynamic mode. While high-speed acceleration is less responsive, the ride comfort remains impressive, even with its sport-oriented suspension. Pricing starts at $44,590, with higher trims offering additional performance and luxury features.
2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale Veloce Review: Plugged Into the Mainstream
True to its Italian nature, the 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale gets a lot of looks.
A neighbor in the building walked across the underground parking garage to comment on it. Thumbs up were a regular occurrence at crosswalks. Little kids smiled and pointed. Across the spectrum, the Tonale’s taut lines earned approval.
That’s all well and good, but looks aren’t enough for guaranteed success in the ultra-competitive small SUV set. Alfa’s newest model is joining the fray with a rare plug-in hybrid powertrain, too. The result is a genuinely fun-to-drive little cute ute—but at a cost.
