There aren’t a whole lot of minivans left on the market: just four traditional ones, really.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has updated its crash testing program due to a glaring gap in rear passenger protection, particularly in minivans and pickups.

New testing standards that include rear-seat passengers have led to fewer vehicles qualifying for top safety awards, with only 48 models meeting the stricter criteria—down from 71 last year.

Minivans have come a long way from their lowly beginnings. Initially conceived as basic transportation for multiple people, the minivan has grown in size, content, and price. Although there are only a handful of choices left on the market, many of the remaining minivans are good ones, none of which may be better than the Chrysler Pacifica, especially the plug-in hybrid.

Minivans. The most disrespected vehicle segment, yet the best for anyone not behind the wheel. Nothing on the road is better for carrying a multitude of passengers over long distances. Although customers no longer favor these workhorses, a few do remain on the market, even if they might not actually be called minivans anymore.

The minivan is still the champion of family transportation.

Buying a minivan is, for most people, the vehicular equivalent of eating your vegetables. We know they’re healthy and good for us but we can’t shake the feeling we’d rather have a piece of cake. Or an SUV, in this case.

I’m not normally the begging sort of person, but I’m just going to cut to the point here: please buy a minivan.

Vans come in many sizes, but share a lot of features and benefits. Perhaps the greatest benefit, though, is versatility. A van can be configured to carry a lot of passengers, or a ton of cargo. It can be outfitted for duty as a camper or as a work space. It offers the utility of a pickup with the security of an SUV. So, van owners, shouldn’t you protect and care for your van by getting and using the best van covers?

If you’re willing to squint at the lines dividing automotive genres, one might consider the first Chrysler minivan the original crossover.

Designed to carry families in comfort, minivans provide an abundance of space for multiple passengers. That means if you’re shopping for new tires for your minivan, you’ll likely want to focus on comfort, road noise, and tread life, unless you really plan on doing some spirited driving. That doesn’t mean, however, you shouldn’t pick a set of tires that offers good performance based on your weather conditions.
