Volvo Teases ES90 Flagship EV Sedan, Full Debut March 2025
Volvo just can't give up sedans, it seems.
Volvo threw a kurvboll at the end of Wednesday's 90/90 event. Ostensibly set up to trumpet the EX90 launch as well as the facelifted 2025 XC90, a short, shadowy teaser ended the event with confirmation of a new electric model next year: the ES90.
You'd be excused for thinking Volvo was over the whole building-actual-cars thing. The brand has already confirmed the S60 will disappear from North America at the end of the year, leaving only the niche S90 carrying the torch for sedans. In the UK, Volvo's lineup is already exclusively crossovers. Nonetheless, the brand will debut the ES90 in March of 2025, a new flagship for the car side of the family.
The 17-second video naturally gives away little. All we get is a clear look at the roofline, which nearly matches the proportions of the existing S90. We would expect the ES90 to sit atop the same SPA2 platform as the EX90, and likely feature the same 111.0-kilowatt-hour battery pack.
While many media folks have had soft spots for Volvo sedans— this writer included—the market response has traditionally been... er, soft. We'll have to wait until March 2025 to see exactly what the ES90 brings to the table, and even longer to know how the market reacts. But Volvo, you have our attention.
