We already knew Volkswagen updated the GTI and Golf R for the 2025 model year.

There are minor styling tweaks, a new infotainment system, and more power for the Golf R, what we didn't know yet was how much it would cost—we know now. Prices have increased across the lineup, led by a $1,435 jump for the Golf R.

The 2025 Golf R now starts at $48,325 including destination. Its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder has been bumped to 328 horsepower, an increase of 13 hp over last year. Power still reaches all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, which is now the only option, as Volkswagen has dropped the manual transmission entirely.

Model / Trim

Price including destination

GTI S

$33,670

GTI SE

$38,645

GTI Autobahn

$42,105

Golf R

$48,325

Golf R Black Edition

$49,640

The GTI sees a smaller price hike of $480, with a base price of $33,670. It retains the 241-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter engine powering the front wheels through a seven-speed DSG automatic. While paddle shifters allow for manual gear selection, the loss of the traditional six-speed manual is extremely disappointing.

Styling changes are subtle, with redesigned headlights and lower front fascias. Inside, both models get a 12.9-inch touchscreen running VW’s latest MIB3 infotainment system. The GTI receives a welcome change in the form of physical buttons replacing the useless haptic controls on the steering wheel. For some reason, the Golf R retains the haptic controls, despite their unpopularity.

Volkswagen’s hot hatches remain a statistically insignificant part of its lineup, with combined GTI and Golf R sales totaling just 15,268 units last year. However, demand has been strong, with Golf R sales up nearly 30 percent and GTI sales up 50 percent.

The recent surge is likely attributed to shoppers panic buying manual-equipped cars before they disappear. It will be interesting to see if the 2025 models maintain the momentum when they arrive at dealerships later this year.
