Ford Wants To Sell You A Car On Amazon

Starting this week, you can now shop for used Ford vehicles on Amazon—the automaker announced a new partnership with the e-commerce giant, allowing buyers to browse and buy certified pre-owned Ford vehicles directly through Amazon’s online marketplace.

Key Points

  • Ford has partnered with Amazon to sell certified pre-owned vehicles online, giving customers in Los Angeles, Seattle, and Dallas the option to browse, finance, and purchase vehicles through Amazon
  • Roughly 20 Ford dealerships are already preparing to list vehicles, with up to 180 expected to join.
  • Buyers can complete the entire transaction online, although state franchise laws still require final delivery through participating dealers.

Ford's Amazon Autos program will launch first in Los Angeles, Seattle, and Dallas, offering a digital alternative for shoppers who prefer to avoid the traditional dealership experience. Customers can browse dealer inventories, arrange financing, and complete their purchase online, though final vehicle pickup still needs to take place at the dealership—no Amazon Prime delivery option here.

For those of you who avoid going to the dealership, how will you know if that used Ford Escape you're arranging financing for smells like wet dog or not?

Initially, the service will only offer Ford Blue Advantage certified pre-owned vehicles, which will include extended warranties. According to the automaker, between 160 and 180 dealers have expressed interest in joining the program, with around 20e preparing to list vehicles on the platform.

Ford says it will offer a 14-day/1,000-mile money-back guarantee on all certified pre-owned vehicles sold by participating Ford dealers through Amazon Autos.

There will be three tiers of certification to meet a wide range of shopping needs:

  • Gold Certified: Ford vehicles up to six years old with fewer than 80,000 miles, which will include a 12-month/12,000-mile comprehensive limited warranty.
  • Blue Certified: used cars from Ford and other brands up to 10 years old with fewer than 150,000 miles. These vehicles come with a 90-day/4,000-mile comprehensive limited warranty.
  • EV Certified: Electric Ford vehicles up to six years old with fewer than 80,000 miles. They come with the same warranty coverage as Gold Certified vehicles.

Ford's play follows Hyundai’s announcement late last year that it would begin selling new vehicles through Amazon, becoming the first automaker to do so. Ford is now the second brand to join the platform, but it's unclear if Ford will attempt to sell new vehicles as well through the retailer.

Tesla remains the only major automaker selling new vehicles directly to consumers without a dealer network—a model that Ford CEO Jim Farley has repeatedly referenced as a cost advantage. While state franchise laws prevent Ford and General Motors from adopting Tesla’s direct-sales approach, online partnerships like this one are a way legacy automakers can gradually evolve with buyer expectations.

If I have to go to the Dealership to pick up the vehicle, then I would rather have a hands on experience and try to haggle the price if there is a scratch on the car or worse.
