Only BMW Could Build A Water Pump That Causes Fire

BMW has announced a major recall affecting 720,796 vehicles across various model lines due to a potential fire risk linked to a short circuit under the hood.

The issue, ironically, originates from the water pump. The problem was first identified in January 2024 when BMW received a report of a "thermal event" in the U.S.

Subsequent investigations uncovered additional cases, leading to a deeper analysis of the water pump and an electric connector associated with a sensor. Under rare conditions, blow-by fluid from the intake air hose can drip onto the plug, damaging its seal. This allows fluid to enter the plug, potentially causing a short circuit that can lead to a thermal event. BMW has documented 18 instances where complaints or actual damage resulted from this issue, but fortunately, no injuries or accidents have been reported.

The recall captures a spectrum of BMW vehicles produced between 2012 and 2018. Models include the X1 sDrive28i and xDrive28i from 2012 to 2015, the Z4 sDrive28i from 2012 to 2016, and the 528i and 528i xDrive from 2012 to 2016. Other affected vehicles include the 328i and 328xi, X5 xDrive 40e, 228i and 228xi, 428i and 428i xDrive, 328xi Gran Turismo, X3 sDrive28i and xDrive28i, X4 xDrive28i, and the 428xi, all spanning various years within that range.

BMW's fix for the issue is straightforward. Dealers will inspect the water pump and the problematic plug connector. If any damage is found, the components will be replaced. Additionally, a protective shield will be installed to prevent fluids from coming into contact with the plug in the future.

Dealer notifications have already begun, and BMW will begin notifying vehicle owners on October 4, 2024. Owners of affected vehicles are advised to contact their dealer to arrange for a free inspection and repair.
