Volvo's Best Modern Designer is Back at the Company
Thomas Ingenlath is responsible for the brand's current design language.
Volvo today announced that Thomas Ingenlath has returned to the Swedish company as Chief Design Officer, effective February 1. Ingenlath previously served as the brand's Senior Vice President of Design before moving to then-new Polestar as that company's CEO. He stepped down from Polestar in 2024.
During his prior stint at the company, Ingenlath was responsible for ushering in Volvo's latest design language. Starting with the second-generation XC90, features like the Thor's Hammer headlight signature and clean surfacing have made their way across the lineup. We here at AutoGuide have consistently called some of Volvos cars the most handsome in their respective classes—even if the brand will soon only offer SUVs in Canada and the USA.
In addition to the XC90, Ingenlath also led the design for the current XC40, S90, and V90. Other designs in the German's resumé include the Polestar 1 and 2, the ultra-efficient Volkswagen XL1, and the Skoda Yeti.
“I am delighted to be returning to Volvo Cars. Design is fundamental to what Volvo stands for. I look forward to working closely with the teams across the company, developing cars that are distinct, relevant and true to the Volvo brand.” said Ingenlath.
Nicholas Gronenthal, who served as Volvo's Interim Head of Global Design, will now move to Head of Design Americas.
