3 Million Vehicles Added to Massive Global Airbag Recall

The airbag recall that saw Toyota fixing 1.73 million vehicles is expanding to include roughly three million vehicles from Honda, Nissan and Mazda.

Honda said today that it will recall 2.03 million vehicles including the Fit sub-compact and CR-V compact crossover. Nissan will need to repair roughly 755,000 vehicles globally and Mazda will need to call back 159,807 of its cars. The newest additions mean that more than 10 million vehicles have been recalled worldwide because of faulty airbags from parts supplier Takata. The affected vehicles were built with airbags that have a potentially defective inflator propellant.

Earlier this month, Toyota announced a recall campaign that included 766,000 vehicles built with the bad airbag assemblies. In total the flawed equipment has been linked to two deaths in the U.S. in Honda vehicles. Moisture from improper storage at the factory cause the inflators to degrade, making it possible for them to explode and spray pieces of metal into the cabin.

Takata told the companies earlier this month that the defective parts slipped past their quality control procedures and blames their delivery to manufacturers on poor record keeping. Consequently, manufacturers are being forced to expand the recall because it isn’t entirely clear which vehicles received the dangerous parts.

Update: Chrysler has announced it is conducting what it calls regional field action, to replace the airbag inflators in cars from Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Chrysler stressed that this is not a recall, but just an “action conducted out of an abundance of caution.”

BMW is also recalling an undisclosed number of 3 Series models including the 325i, 325Xi, 330i and 330Xi from the 2001 to 2005 model years. The 325Ci and 330Ci from 2001 to 2006 are also being recalled, although BMW is restricting the campaign to models registered in Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the US Virgin Islands.

Ford is also recalling 58,669 vehicles originally sold in or that have been registered in the same areas including the Ford GT from 2005 and 2006, the Mustang from 2007 and the Ranger from 2004.
