Toyota enters the world of electric-vehicles with the bZ SUV. Built in conjunction with Subaru, the bZ4X comes with a single motor and front-wheel drive or dual motors powering all four wheels. Unlike a lot of EVs, the vehicle promises some real off-road ability with impressive ground clearance and X-Mode to maximize traction in slippery situations.

The bZ is the first member of an entire EV family at Toyota that will soon expand to include more models.

Toyota BZ Overview

For 2026, Toyota has renamed its all-electric SUV from bZ4X to the simplified Toyota bZ, accompanied by updates to power, range, charging capabilities, and design.

The most notable change comes under the hood. All-Wheel Drive (AWD) models now deliver a combined 338 horsepower—up 50 percent from the outgoing version’s 214 hp—allowing a 0–60 mph time of around 4.9 seconds. Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) variants now produce up to 221 hp, compared to 201 hp previously.

Two battery options are available: a 57.7-kWh unit and a larger 74.7-kWh pack. Depending on configuration, the bZ’s manufacturer-estimated range spans from 236 miles (XLE FWD with the smaller battery) to 314 miles (XLE FWD Plus with the larger battery). The higher-capacity battery is available across XLE AWD and Limited trims as well.

Charging infrastructure sees improvements too. The bZ is now equipped with a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, opening up access to a broader network of DC fast chargers. Plug & Charge functionality is also included, simplifying authentication and billing. A new battery preconditioning function aids in maintaining optimal charging performance in cold weather, working alongside an upgraded 11-kW onboard AC charger and a standard heat pump system.

Design updates include a reworked front fascia, new lighting elements, and available color-matched overfenders. Inside, the dashboard has been redesigned to accommodate a 14-inch multimedia touchscreen, while new ambient lighting options (up to 64 colors) and dual wireless chargers further modernize the cabin.

All models use Toyota’s e-TNGA platform, contributing to a low center of gravity and improved driving dynamics. AWD variants come standard with X-MODE, Toyota’s terrain response system, which now features Grip-Control for light off-road use.

The 2026 Toyota bZ will be offered in XLE and Limited trims with both FWD and AWD options, and is expected to reach dealerships in the second half of 2025. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.

2023 Toyota bZ4X First Drive Review: The RAV4 of EVs is Here

You’d be forgiven for thinking the 2023 Toyota bZ4X should have debuted years ago.

After all, Toyota popularized electrified mobility 20 years ago when the second-generation Prius showed up. In the years since, the RAV4 has ascended to sales supremacy, and its own hybrid model still has months-long wait times. So ditching the dino juice seemed like a natural evolution.

The result is this, the 2023 Toyota bZ4X. Arriving late to the scene, Toyota’s mass-production EV is quite good, with a focus on ease of use and high quality typical of the brand. It really is the RAV4 of the compact crossover EV crowd, for better and for worse.

Like the GR86 and BRZ sports cars, the bZ4X is a collaboration between Toyota and Subaru; the latter’s version is called Solterra. Both ride on the e-TNGA platform, a dedicated platform for battery electric vehicles. They are functionally identical, with the only exterior differences being the headlights, taillights, and front bumper.
