Toyota’s RAV4 is one of the brand’s most important models. Available with a gas, hybrid, or plug-in hybrid powertrain, there is plenty of choice when it comes the RAV4. Wearing more traditional boxy SUV styling, the current model continues the sales success of generations past.

Although it’s not one of the more premium entries in the segment, there’s no arguing how power and efficient the hybrid drivetrains are.

Pros

Fuel efficiency, engine power, price point

Cons

Interior quality, low front seat comfort, average handling and ride comfort

Bottom Line

For those that value fuel economy, power, and pricing above all else.

Toyota RAV4 Hybrid vs Honda CR-V Hybrid Comparison

It’s hard to overstate just how important the battle of the 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid vs 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid is.

Last year, Honda sold 238,155 CR-V models in America alone. Not too bad for a year rife with inventory shortages. That makes the CR-V the 7th most-sold vehicle in America.

For Toyota, the news is even better. The brand was able to deliver 399,941 RAV4s to American customers in the same year, making it the 4th best-selling vehicle.

The secret to the success of these two small SUVs is value and choice. Both auto manufacturers offer plenty of configurations, at price points that fit the wants and needs of many families. Some of the more popular choices amongst consumers are the hybrids.

VIDEO - 2022 Toyota RAV4 SE Hybrid AWD Review: Quick Take

2022 Toyota RAV4 SE Hybrid AWD Review: Quick Take

Earlier this year, we held our massive 2022 AutoGuide Compact SUV Comparison test presented by NRS Brakes. We’re now going to take a closer look at one of the entries, the 2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.

Unlike some of the brand’s competitors, Toyota offers the RAV4 Hybrid in a variety of trims, starting with the low-level LE. Arriving for our evaluation is the mid-level SE trim that adds some features and style to the vehicle, including black badging and matching black wheels.

Toyota has been at the hybrid game a long time and the brand has really nailed down the formula. The price to upgrade from gas only to a hybrid-electric powertrain isn’t as steep as it once was. Although there is no equivalent SE gasoline version, most Hybrid versions of the RAV4 only command a $2,700 price premium.

Best Small SUV | Testing (almost) Every Compact SUV

Welcome to the single most important comparison we will have all year. The AutoGuide 2022 Best Small SUV Comparison sponsored by NRS Brakes.

The average family car these days isn’t even a car at all anymore. Compact SUVs are the sweet spot these days, selling thousands of examples every single day in Canada and the United States. If you’re shopping this part of the market, at least a few of these SUVs will be on your short list.

2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid SE Review: Hooked on a Feeling

If you had one of the most successful products out there, would you really mess with success?

In 2021, Toyota sold a RAV4, on average, every 77 seconds. Roughly 3 out of 10 were hybrids—almost 4 out of 10, including the plug-in RAV4 Prime. Put another way, Toyota sold more electrified RAV4s last year than Ford sold all types of Escapes.

Needless to say, this year’s mid-cycle refresh for the RAV4 was light. Not much has changed on Toyota’s best-seller, because not much needs to. This new-for-2022 SE grade promises to bring more style to the affordable end of the hybrid lineup, and it does so, even if aspects of the experience are starting to age Toyota’s all-star.

In the grand Toyota hierarchy, SE and XSE are the sportier-looking trims, with the former carrying a shorter feature list and smaller price tag. Like the XSE, the SE is available only on the electrified RAV4, with Toyota reinforcing the hybrid’s position as the performer of the lineup.

Hyundai Tucson Hybrid vs Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Comparison: Fuel-Sipping Family Haulers

Hyundai’s coming at the king.

The Toyota RAV4 has been the best-selling non-pickup in the US and Canada for years now. In America, the Hyundai Tucson was ninth—not overall, but in the compact crossover class. Toyota sold nearly three and a half times the number of RAV4s: 430,387 to 123,657.

Those are the overall figures; what’s more impressive is how around 28 percent of RAV4s are the hybrid model, a number that is consistently climbing. More over, the split would be even higher if Toyota could build ’em fast enough. There are waitlists: clearly, the RAV4 Hybrid is the desirable one.

Toyota RAV4 vs Toyota Venza: A Boxy and Practical Crossover, or A Stylish and Luxurious One?

Like many automakers, Toyota is continuing to expand its SUV and crossover offerings so that it can appeal to as many different types of vehicle buyers as possible.

As we write this, Toyota has six distinct utility models in its lineup, and will add a seventh later this year with the first-ever Corolla Cross, a small crossover based on the Corolla compact car.

Today, however, we’re comparing two existing Toyota crossover models that share a lot of technology but are aimed at much different buyers.

One is the Toyota RAV4, a compact SUV that wears one of the most recognizable nameplates in the American auto industry. Now in its fifth generation, the RAV4 offers gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in powertrains to give Toyota shoppers a range of choices for what energy source drives their vehicle.

Jeep Cherokee vs Toyota RAV4: Which One is the Compact Crossover SUV Champ?

These days, the compact crossover SUV segment is front-and-center in the auto industry.

These vehicles have largely replaced the mid-size sedan category as the ride of choice for family drivers seeking useful interior space, a combination of good performance and thrifty fuel economy, and sensible pricing.

Jeep’s Cherokee is one of the oldest nameplates in the compact SUV class and helped popularize utility vehicles of all sizes. The Cherokee went on hiatus in 2001, after which it was replaced by the Liberty, but returned in 2014 as a thoroughly modern crossover engineered for a more car-like drive with options that recall its namesake’s off-road toughness.

The Toyota RAV4 has been a mainstay of the compact crossover category since the late 1990s but has grown to the point that it now nearly qualifies as a mid-size vehicle. In recent years, Toyota has added options that enhance the RAV4’s towing and off-road capabilities.

For a few years now, Toyota’s bread-and-butter crossover has been the undisputed sales champ not just of the segment, but of all passenger vehicles outside pickups. It is the cute ute everyone is aiming for.

That includes Hyundai, which gave its Tucson crossover a dramatic overhaul for 2022. Bigger and better-equipped than before, the Tucson also offers available hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. Yes, just like the RAV4. It’s clear Hyundai has Toyota in its sights, but which one is better suited to your needs? Let’s dive in and find out.
