Toyota’s RAV4 is one of the brand’s most important models, and the best-selling vehicle in Canada and America that isn't a pick-up. And for 2026 it's all new with a long list of upgrades to keep it a top seller.

Pros

Fuel efficiency, engine power, price point.

Cons

Interior quality, uncomfortable front seats, so-so handling and ride comfort.

Bottom Line

For those that value fuel economy, power, and pricing above all else.

Toyota RAV4 Overview

The 2026 Toyota RAV4 represents the sixth generation of the compact SUV, introducing a redesign with a focus on electrification and diverse styling. It will be available in Core, Sport, and Rugged styles, spanning seven grades, including a refreshed Woodland and the debut of a GR SPORT variant. This new generation of the RAV4 will be exclusively offered with electrified powertrains, either Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) or Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) options.

The RAV4 GR SPORT, developed with Toyota GAZOO Racing, is designed for enhanced handling, featuring a GR-tuned suspension and power steering, increased body rigidity, and unique 20-inch wheels with summer tires. It will be powered by a PHEV system and exhibits an aggressive exterior with a GR Functional MATRIX grille and wing-type spoilers. The Woodland grade, now a standalone offering within the Rugged design, is geared towards outdoor activities. It features a slightly raised hammerhead front end with a black split grille and integrated LED lighting, a half-inch higher ride height with standard all-terrain tires, raised roof rails with crossbars, and a 1¼-inch rear activity mount. The Woodland grade will be available in both HEV and PHEV configurations, with standard AWD.

Powertrain advancements are a key aspect of the new RAV4. The PHEV system now delivers up to 320 combined system net horsepower, an increase of 18 hp over the previous generation, and an estimated all-electric driving range of 50 miles, up from 42 miles. PHEV models will also see an expansion from two to four grades for 2026, with the Woodland and GR SPORT joining the existing SE and XSE. All PHEV models will come standard with AWD. DC fast charging capability, allowing a 10% to 80% charge in approximately 30 minutes, will be available on the PHEV XSE and Woodland grades.

HEV models will feature Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system, increasing output to 236 combined system net horsepower on AWD models and 226 hp on FWD models. For the first time, FWD will be available on RAV4 Hybrid, providing a 23 hp improvement over the outgoing FWD gas model. Specific AWD grades, including the HEV XLE, Woodland, SE, XSE, Limited, and PHEV SE, XSE, and Woodland, will have an increased towing capacity of up to 3,500 pounds.

Inside, the 2026 RAV4 aims for a functional and user-friendly experience. It integrates Toyota’s new Arene software development platform, which underpins the updated Toyota Audio Multimedia System and the Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 (TSS 4.0) suite. The infotainment system will feature a slim 10.5-inch or available 12.9-inch touchscreen with standard wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility. A new standard 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster provides customizable options. Select grades will also incorporate a new shift-by-wire system. Interior materials and styling vary by grade, including fabric and SofTex® seating, with specific accents and features for the Woodland, XSE, and GR SPORT models. Exterior color options include new choices like Urban Rock, Meteor Shower, Everest, and Storm Cloud, alongside returning favorites and available two-tone paint schemes. The 2026 RAV4 models are expected to arrive at U.S. Toyota dealerships later this year, with pricing to be announced closer to the on-sale date.

2024 Toyota RAV4 Prime SE Review: The Invisible Machine

The 2024  Toyota RAV4 Prime SE is the ultimate NPC car.

Forget the awkward ties that term has to a very specific type of always-online person who is very angry with very many things. In silver especially, the Prime blends in to the point of invisibility, and there’s an advantage to that chameleon approach. The plug-in variant of North America’s favorite non-pickup does the whole daily driver thing with top marks, shuttling up to five people and their things with better manners than the regular hybrid. Under those unassuming looks, the Prime works even harder to save you money too—it just asks for more up front.

Toyota RAV4 LE Vs XLE: Which Trim is Right For You?

It's the best-selling vehicle in North America that isn't a pickup. But which Toyota RAV4 trim is right for you: the LE or the XLE?

Toyota's compact SUV is the vehicular Baskin-Robbins, offering buyers approximately 31 flavors of its best-seller. Front-drive, all-wheel drive, gas, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, road-biased or rugged—consider it a two-scoops kind of experience, such are the mix-and-match opportunities.

Toyota RAV4 Hybrid vs Honda CR-V Hybrid Comparison

It’s hard to overstate just how important the battle of the 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid vs 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid is.

Last year, Honda sold 238,155 CR-V models in America alone. Not too bad for a year rife with inventory shortages. That makes the CR-V the 7th most-sold vehicle in America!

For Toyota, the news is even better. The brand was able to deliver 399,941 RAV4s to American customers in the same year, making it the 4th best-selling vehicle.

The secret to the success of these two small SUVs is value and choice. Both auto manufacturers offer plenty of configurations, at price points that fit the wants and needs of many families. Some of the more popular choices amongst consumers are the hybrids.

VIDEO: 2022 Toyota RAV4 SE Hybrid AWD Review: Quick Take

2022 Toyota RAV4 SE Hybrid AWD Review: Quick Take

Earlier this year, we held our massive 2022 AutoGuide Compact SUV Comparison test presented by NRS Brakes. We’re now going to take a closer look at one of the entries, the 2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.

Unlike some of the brand’s competitors, Toyota offers the RAV4 Hybrid in a variety of trims, starting with the low-level LE. Arriving for our evaluation is the mid-level SE trim that adds some features and style to the vehicle, including black badging and matching black wheels.

Toyota has been at the hybrid game a long time and the brand has really nailed down the formula. The price to upgrade from gas only to a hybrid-electric powertrain isn’t as steep as it once was. Although there is no equivalent SE gasoline version, most hybrid versions of the RAV4 only command a $2,700 price premium.
