The Best Air Fresheners for Your Car
You’re feeling pumped as you drive to work, you’ve just finished a killer workout, and you beat your personal record for the bench press. Simultaneously you conceived the perfect close for the big presentation you’re making that morning. Life looks good.
Meanwhile, your gym bag is sitting on the back seat of your Mercedes; it’s stuffed to the bursting with bacteria-laden, sweat-soaked workout gear. Oh, and today’s high is going to be in the 90s. You’re too preoccupied with your career’s upward trajectory to think about what your car will smell like at the end of the day, but you’ll be rudely reminded when you drive home.
Relief from the swampy fug is as close as a cellophane packet containing a fragrant foam tree or one of the other best car air fresheners we’ve reviewed here.
Before you reach for an air freshener, it’s a good idea to check your cabin air filter. They can become clogged with atmospheric filth and develop musty smells that get pumped into your car’s cabin through the HVAC system.
How we picked the best car air fresheners
We chose the best car air fresheners based on our own experiences, customer reviews, and testing several different brands and fragrances in our own cars. We stuck with air fresheners from major brands that can be easily purchased locally or online.
Table of contents
1. Editor's Pick: Meguiar's Whole Car Air Refresher
Meguiar's is an old name in car care, but it's primarily associated with car wash soaps, cutting compounds, and waxes. However, they have a long-standing reputation for high-quality products, and their Whole Car Air Refresher is no exception.
The Meguair's solution to in-car smells is a bit more involved than hanging a foam tree from the rearview mirror. The three-step process is outlined on the back of the can. It starts with vacuuming and cleaning the interior, which is a good way to help control in-car smells on its own. The next step is to start the engine and turn on the car's ventilation system in "recirculate," then place the canister in the center of the car and depress the locking spray nozzle. After which, the car is allowed to idle with the HVAC system cranking and Meguiar's spray filling the cabin for about 15 minutes.
Meguiar's claims the whole process will eliminate smells at the "molecular level," and after trying out the stuff, we found no reason to quibble. The cockpit of our 1989 Town Car was left with nothing but a pleasant "new car smell" after treatment.
It's important to mention that no one should be in the car while Meguiar's Air Refresher is being used because it can irritate the respiratory system. The usual prohibitions on intentional concentration and inhalation also apply here. For individuals who are especially sensitive to chemicals, this product may not be the best choice.
Pros | Doesn't just mask odors, inexpensive |
Cons | More complicated to use than a foam tree |
2. Best Bargain: Little Trees Air Freshener
We surmise that millions of Little Trees air fresheners have been sold over the years. If there's a convenience store, auto parts store, or car wash that doesn't have a selection of the scented foam conifers, we haven't seen it. Indeed, they must do a booming business. Otherwise, they couldn't have afforded the huge Little Trees booth we saw at SEMA last year.
They don't use sophisticated molecular-level, odor-eliminating chemistry like our Editor's Pick from Meguiar's, but they're inexpensive, can be purchased anywhere, and come in various fragrances.
Little Trees can smell like everything from Sandalwood to Pure Steel (Whatever that may be). The Black Ice Little Trees we tested have a smell that isn't unpleasant but somehow makes us think of youthful trips to the corner convenience store for a refreshing 6-pack of Zima.
Still, Amazon shows over 20,000 reviews for Black Ice Little Trees, and the positivity rating is holding at a solid 90%—enviable for any product.
Pros | Wide variety of scents and designs, strong scent, inexpensive |
Cons | Strong scent may be too strong for some, does not deodorize |
3. Yankee Candle Smart Scent Vent Clip Air Freshener
Having a lit candle in the cupholder is not recommended. However, Yankee Candle still managed to find a way to imbue your car's cabin with folksy fragrances. Yankee Smart Scents Vent Clips grip the directional air vanes on your car's dashboard vents so the scent can blast out with heated or cooled air.
We tested Bahama Breeze, one of a selection of scents with names that owe more to marketing hyperbole than anything else. Name aside; it made the cockpit of our spunky Fiat 500 Abarth smell tropical and sweet. Many other fragrances are available.
The level of fragrance can be adjusted via a slide on the back of the air freshener, a feature we liked as our Fiat's small cabin didn't need much. Also, the Fiat's vents are not built with the most solid materials yet suffered no damage or impairment of function under the added load of the Yankee Candle Smart Scents air freshener. However, having a translucent plastic disc of colored smell juice clipped to a dash vent does not enhance its appearance.
Pros | Adjustable fragrance level, easy to install, long lasting |
Cons | Not very attractive |
4. California Scents Air Freshener
California Scents air fresheners come in hermetically sealed cans. The airtight packaging has the advantage of keeping the fragrance from dissipating until you're ready to use the air freshener and preventing anywhere they're stored from becoming inundated with fragrance. To use the product, pop the lid off using the pull tab, pop on the adjustable cover, then slide the adjuster tab to select your desired level of fragrance.
We tested the Coronado Cherry scent in our musty, two-decade-old work truck. Within a couple of hours of placing the can in the passenger compartment, the sweet fragrance was immediately apparent as soon as we opened the door. They're suitable for household air freshening too.
California Scents offers a wide range of fragrances and should have something to suit most tastes. Buyers on Amazon have given 91% positive ratings to Coronado Cherry and are similarly enthusiastic about the company's other fragrances. At least one customer complained that the fragrance dissipated quickly in warm weather.
Pros | Strong, long-lasting fragrance, affordable |
Cons | Smell may dissipate more quickly in warm weather. |
5. Febreze Car Vent Clips Air Freshener
These car vent clip air fresheners from Febreze are an inexpensive, popular solution for improving the smell of your car’s cabin. Febreze offers a selection of different fragrances.
The Febreze Car Vent Clips Air Freshener easily attaches to your car’s A/C vents using a plastic clip. The air from the vents then helps to waft the scent around the car. Febreze says the air fresheners help to eliminate stubborn vehicle odors for up to 30 days. They are also adjustable, allowing you to decide how potent you want the scent to be, a feature shared with the similar Yankee Candle Smart Scents clip-on air freshener.
These air fresheners received 87% positive reviews on Amazon. There were a few complaints about the scent being "cloying" or "perfumy."
Pros | Low price, adjustable, ideal for smokers, wide variety of available scents |
Cons | Some users may find the scent too strong |
6. Ozium Smoke & Odor Eliminator Car & Home Air Sanitizer
Besides merely perfuming the air with a pleasant scent, Ozium is antibacterial. Killing odor-causing bacteria is an excellent way to help control unpleasant smells.
We personally know a school bus driver who says Ozium is the air freshener he found most effective at eliminating the pungent post-practice scent left behind by the boys' lacrosse team. If that's not high praise for a product's efficacy, we don't know what is.
Ozium isn't offered in an array of fragrances like other air fresheners, and it's also more expensive. That price may be worth it, though, as Ozium garnered an impressive 94% positive ratings on Amazon.
Pros | Antibacterial, 94% positive ratings on Amazon |
Cons | More expensive than other air fresheners, limited fragrances |
