The Infiniti QX55 is a stylish entry in the coupe-crossover segment, blending striking aesthetics with a focus on comfort over sportiness. Borrowing design cues from the original FX SUV, the QX55 stands out with clean lines, a tapered rear, and eye-catching details like its “piano key” LED taillights and standard 20-inch wheels. Inside, the cabin features premium materials, including available Monaco Red leather and open-pore wood accents, while offering class-leading rear legroom and versatile cargo space of up to 54.1 cubic feet.

Powering the QX55 is Infiniti's innovative 2.0-liter VC-Turbo engine, delivering 268 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. While the engine offers impressive numbers, the continuously variable transmission (CVT) detracts from the driving experience with its lack of responsiveness and refinement. The QX55’s all-wheel-drive system defaults to front-wheel drive but can send power to the rear wheels when needed. The ride prioritizes comfort, with smooth handling and minimal road noise, making it a solid choice for relaxed driving.

However, the dual-screen infotainment system feels outdated and lacks seamless functionality. While the QX55 excels in aesthetics and comfort, its tech and performance may leave enthusiasts and tech-savvy buyers looking elsewhere, positioning it as a refined but less dynamic option in the segment.

The problem with name-dropping your inspiration is you immediately stack the deck against yourself.

If the people like product X, the logic goes, then some of that goodwill should transfer to product Y. That seems to be Infiniti’s game plan during the digital pre-drive 2022 QX55 presentation, where the original FX SUV figures prominently. The FX started the coupe-over segment according to Infiniti, which is technically correct ( the best kind of correct). It was a style tour de force for crossovers, and an athletic one to boot. Infiniti is clearly hoping that magic has transferred to the QX55.

Some of it has. The QX55 accomplishes the aesthetic challenge thrown down by the old “Bionic Cheetah.” It’s not simply good-looking; it just might be the most attractive car in its class. The QX55 can’t match its inspiration’s dynamic qualities however, and in doing so, it makes us more nostalgic for what was, than excited for what is.
