Toyota Builds The GR86 Everyone Wants
Toyota has built a turbocharged, all-wheel-drive GR86 for SEMA. No, you can't have it.
The GR86 Rally Legacy concept was designed to capture the spirit of the legendary Celica GT-Four rally car from the ‘90s. The GR86 concept trades its standard rear-wheel-drive setup for the potent 300-hp, all-wheel-drive powertrain from Toyota's GR Corolla, turning the nimble coupe into a rally-ready beast. Toyota even dished out a Castrol Celica GT-Four-inspired livery.
Toyota GR86 Rally Legacy Concept: All The Details
Under the hood, the GR86 Rally Legacy is powered by a1.6-liter turbo three-cylinder, boosted by a high-performance intercooler, oil cooler, and a race-spec ECU, delivering the same 300 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque as the GR Corolla. In case you're planning your own garage build, jus know this powertrain transplant was anything but straightforward.
Toyota had to engineer a custom subframe and mounts for the engine, as well as redesign the entire suspension including bespoke control arms and coil-over dampers to interface with the GR Corolla's drivetrain and ensure the GR86 could handle the upgraded all-wheel-drive system.
Visually, the concept’s homage to rally heritage is unmistakable. It sports a Halo White paint job over a Castrol-inspired red and green livery, along with red mud flaps and a custom exhaust exiting through the rear license plate area. A uniquely curved spoiler and rally lights further amplify the '90s vibes. Inside, the cabin is stripped down to essentials with a full roll cage, racing seats, and six-point harnesses, underscoring its serious off-road intent.
Just remember Toyota has no plans to bring the GR86 Rally Legacy into production as-is. It's basically a meme at this point—enthusiasts want more paper power or forced induction for the GR86, meanwhile, Toyota says no. Enjoy the photos at least.
