NHTSA Closes Probe Into Ford's 2.7L EcoBoost Engine

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently concluded an investigation into nearly 411,315 Ford SUVs and trucks due to concerns over engine power loss.

The probe, which began in 2022, initially focused on Ford Bronco models equipped with 2.7-liter EcoBoost engines, after reports of valvetrain issues raised questions about the engine's reliability. The investigation was expanded to include other Ford models using the same powertrain, such as the Edge, F-150, and Explorer.

The NHTSA investigation came in response to numerous complaints from owners experiencing sudden power loss while driving. The valvetrain problem can lead to engine stalls or even total engine failure, especially at higher mileages. Addressing these concerns, Ford took preemptive steps earlier this year by submitting a recall request to assess vehicles equipped with the affected 2.7L EcoBoost engines—the recall was expanded to include 3.0L EcoBoost engines as well.

As part of the fix, Ford introduced an extended warranty program to reassure customers and mitigate potential risks. Vehicles impacted by the issue now have coverage for up to 10 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first.
