Scout Motors, Volkswagen’s new EV offshoot, will be tapping into software and zonal architecture developed by "rival" Rivian when it starts production in 2027.

Rivian’s Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid confirmed to TechCrunch that Scout's upcoming Traveler SUV and Terra pickup truck will leverage this tech. The Traveler and Terra will use Rivian's zonal architecture, meaning their systems are controlled by just a few computers managing distinct areas of the vehicle, simplifying the complexity of EV hardware.

In press images, Scout’s software interface bears a resemblance to Rivian’s, reinforcing the synergy. However, it was emphasized that each brand will maintain its unique identity and features. It's expected the sharing will be limited to software architectures and there will be little if any hardware sharing.

The VW-Rivian joint venture is working toward finalizing a $5 billion deal by the end of the year, with plans for this tech to underpin most of Volkswagen’s future vehicles. Scout’s inclusion in the project wasn’t initially clear and caused some confusion around the role each brand would play in VW's electric future.
