Lucid Cosmos Delayed As Tesla-Rival Faces Another Setback

Lucid is slowing down its product rollout as part of a broader financial reset. The luxury EV manufacturer announced during its Q2 earnings report that its upcoming mid-size vehicle, the Cosmos SUV, will no longer launch this year as originally intended. Instead, customer deliveries have been pushed back to at least 2027, with CEO Silvio Napoli pointing toward a second-half 2027 arrival.

Q2 Financial Reality & The "Operational Reset"

The delay comes on the heels of a challenging second quarter. Lucid reported a wider-than-expected net loss alongside a minor revenue shortfall. Following recent leadership changes at the executive level, newly appointed CEO Silvio Napoli declined to update the company’s full-year 2026 production guidance, opting instead to pivot toward an "operational reset."

To stabilize its balance sheet, Lucid identified $1.4 billion in target cash flow improvements through the remainder of the year. Key measures include trimming near-term infrastructure and development spending, accelerating efforts to clear backlogged vehicle inventory, and reorganizing operations under the new leadership structure.

Addressing recent market speculation regarding potential bankruptcy, Lucid publicly rejected the claims. The automaker reaffirmed that its current liquidity extends comfortably into 2027, bolstered by continued backing from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).

Why the Delay Makes Strategic Sense

Industry observers were skeptical of Lucid’s original timeline for the Cosmos. Prior to the announcement, the model had only been shown in silhouette teasers, making a late-2026 production ramp unlikely.

This reflects Lucid's historical trajectory, where the original Air sedan took multiple years to progress from concept to scale manufacturing, and the larger Gravity SUV followed a similar path by delivering only a small batch of units in late 2024 before monthly deliveries reached triple digits in late 2025.

Napoli directly addressed the rationale for the revised schedule, emphasizing quality over speed:

"We’re not going to make the mistake of the past where products, great cars, were in fact tainted by launching before things were ready. I think it’s going to be ’27... Most likely the second half of ’27."

Given the risk of rushing an unrefined product to market during a turnaround effort, postponing the launch gives the automaker time to refine both its manufacturing process and vehicle quality.

Lucid published new images showcasing prototype Cosmos models undergoing cold-weather testing in sub-zero conditions. Built on the company's new mid-size EV architecture, the Cosmos features a sleek, coupe-like sloped roofline reminiscent of models like the BMW X4.
