SALINAS—Ford has unveiled the Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon at Laguna Seca Raceway—the newest addition to the Mustang GTD lineup presents with exposed carbon fiber bodywork, taking a page from the Ford GT's playbook.

Key Points

  • Ford has introduced the Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon, showcasing fully exposed carbon-fiber bodywork for weight savings and motorsport-inspired style.
  • The trim includes precise carbon weave alignment, unique black Brembo calipers, gloss-black GTD badging, and comes standard with the Performance package.
  • Interior highlights include black leather, Dinamica suede, and Hyper Lime stitching, with first deliveries slated for October.

The trim's exposed carbon fiber reminds me of taking delivery of a brand new race car—immaculate, fresh carbon untouched, and undamaged by drivers or walls, or tires. Devoid of sponsors or complex vinyl wraps, just a car, just a very fast car.

Wraps are usually cheaper and lighter than paint—in this case, eliminating the paint highlights the car's carbon weave and reduces weight. Swapping painted panels for bonded carbon-fiber doors alone trims about 13 pounds compared to a Carbon Series GTD with the Performance package.

Ford says the body panels have precise weave alignment across the hood, roof, rear deck, and wing, and a matching pattern on the fenders and body panels—it's painstaking work for the people building the panels at Multimatic's Markham, Ontario, factory, where regular Mustang bodies are transformed into fire-breathing GTDs.

Black Brembo brake calipers and gloss-black GTD badging complete the exterior look, while the Performance package—standard on this model—brings track-ready aero and chassis tuning.

Inside, the GTD Liquid Carbon features black leather and Dinamica microfiber suede, contrasted with Hyper Lime stitching on key touchpoints including the seats, steering wheel, and dash. The seats also have a reflective gradient down the center.

Ford says the Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon represents the purest expression of the GTD’s lightweight construction and precision engineering—at least until the next special edition debuts. It's the fourth version of the GTD now available to shoppers, including the standard car, the Spirit of America, and the Carbon Series trims.

The automaker didn't reveal how many Liquid Carbon cars it plans to build. Because it's so difficult to get the carbon weave to line up perfectly, Multimatic only ever built 30 Liquid Carbon Ford GTs—expect the Mustangs to be similarly rare. Deliveries of the first Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon are scheduled to begin in October.

The Mustang has been ugly since 2015 when they turned it into a Fusion coupe. While it's a good car, they need to make a return to the more classic muscle car styling they had going from 2005-2014. Also lose the digital dash, which is atrocious.
