Is The Ford Mustang GTD Faster Than A Viper ACR?

Ford is hoping to make history with the Mustang GTD.

The company aims to drop a sub-seven-minute lap time at the Nurburgring, a feat no stock American car has ever achieved. If successful, it would put Ford in an elite category of performance vehicles, surpassing the record set by the 2017 SRT Viper ACR, which holds the fastest American lap at 7:01.30.

In case you forgot, the Mustang GTD is not your father's Mustang. With a staggering 815 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque, it’s more racecar than road car and built to compete at a global level.

At a projected cost of $325,000, the GTD is priced in supercar territory, so it better deliver a Nurburgring lap time that takes your breath away. The Porsche 911 GT3 RS lapped the Nurburgring in 6:44.848. Honestly, never mind seven minutes, anything short of besting the GT3 RS should be considered a failure.

While the current teaser video suggests Ford is confident in its attempt, the official lap time remains under wraps for now. The Mustang GTD’s Nürburgring lap time could define its place in the pantheon of high-performance vehicles, potentially putting it on par with, or even above, some of the most respected names in the industry.
