Ford Recalling The Ranger Because The Sun Visors Might Short Circuit

Ford is recalling 140,201 Ranger pickups in the United States due to a wiring issue that could increase the risk of a fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The problem centers on wiring harnesses located in the headliner and sun visor area. NHTSA says these harnesses may have been improperly routed or wrapped with excessive tape, which could lead to damage over time. If the wiring insulation wears through, it could create an electrical short in the A-pillar, raising the risk of a fire or crash.

To address the issue, dealers will inspect the affected wiring and replace any damaged harnesses as needed, all vehicles will receive a Body Control Module (BCM) software update that will stop powering the sunvisor lamp after reaching a threshold number of trouble counts to prevent future shorts. All work will be carried out at no cost to owners.

Ford is aware of three warranty claims, two field reports, and one customer service report in the US potentially related to this concern. Only 1% of the recalled vehicle population is suspected to be problematic.
