Porsche Kills Its Best Car

Porsche production manager Albrecht Reimold tells Automobilewoche that the 718 lineup, comprised of the Boxster and Cayman, will end production in 2025. Porsche has already been forced to retire the 718 twins in Europe due to more stringent cybersecurity regulations (and the Macan along with it). More stringent emissions requirements across the pond would have done the pair in at some point as it is. The 718’s electric replacement is underway, and while Reimold didn’t share further details on the upcoming models, it’s hard to imagine Porsche will leave much of a gap between the end of 718 production and the next model’s introduction.

The pair of sports cars aren’t the only ones losing their gas engines. In 2026, per Reimold, the company will be “committed” to the all-electric Macan that debuted this year. As the gas-powered Macan has already exited production in Europe, it makes sense to discontinue production elsewhere EM a step exacerbated by parts shortages. All this is to say nothing of Europe’s tightening emissions regulations, which are yet another problem for the continued existence of a gas-powered Macan in any market. Despite the Macan’s position as one of the best-selling Porsches, Reimold says that it isn’t reasonable to continue investment in the 10-year-old car, saying that “volume alone” isn’t a benchmark for Porsche.

Electric cars will have their day, but most likely in about 30 years when the grid is rebuilt 1st.Right now they & their pushers are just morons.

Snatching up a GT4RS (with weissach of course) and keeping it maintained, undriven and garaged seems like a very good investment right now. Sadly the era of 'old school' drivers cars is coming to a close.
