The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X Just Ran 0–60 MPH in 1.68 Seconds
The 1,250-horsepower Corvette flagship is now the quickest-accelerating American car ever—with an asterisk.
You know, we were just thinking it'd been at least a few weeks since the C8 Corvette claimed an automotive record. So we're pleased to see Chevrolet has done it again with the bonkers, 1,250-horsepower ZR1X, this time at the drag strip. The hybridized, all-wheel driver Super-Vette laid down insane figures at US 131 Motorsports Park in Michigan, scorching the run to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 1.68 seconds and going on to vanquish the quarter-mile in 8.675 seconds, with a trap speed of 159 mph (256 km/h).
There is a big ol' asterisk sitting beside these mighty times, mind you. While the car was stock, running the default ZR1X aero kit and Michelin PS4S tires wrapped in the (optional) carbon fiber wheels, the track surface was prepped. That means the lucky folks who drop the $210,000-ish to own a ZR1X won't be replicating the run between stop lights. Then again, Chevy did run a ZR1X with the ZTK package on an un-prepped strip and it still pulled a 1.89 dash to 60 mph (97 km/h) and clinched the quarter-mile in 8.99 seconds. Not exactly tardy, then.
Adding to the impressive stats is a monstrously quick 1.37-second 60-foot run, showing how the electric quotient benefits the ZR1X at the strip. Consistency is important too: Chevrolet says the ZR1X laid down numerous full runs under 8.8 seconds. Chevy development driver Stefan Frick set all the times, crediting the C8 Corvette's standard Custom Launch Control for finding the right balance of launch rpm and wheel spin.
The ZR1X joins a very exclusive club with this performance. Multi-million dollar supercars like the Bugatti Tourbillon and Rimac Nevera R can run 8s too, but the only American car that can keep up with the Vette is the Lucid Air Sapphire. The all-electric sedan is a little pricier at $250,500 (including destination), but its performance figures align with the non-prepped ZR1X times: 1.89 seconds to 60 mph (97 km/h) and a quarter-mile time of 8.95 seconds.
What will be the next record for the Corvette ZR1X? We can only guess, and we hope we get our chance behind its squircle steering wheel some time this year.
